Empty Seats Surprising? Mets and Yankees not selling out

This was a nice pleasant Sunday afternoon.  The Mets and Yankees both played home games in their new stadiums.

The announced (aka paid) attendance at both parks?

The Yankees announced 43,068 in a stadium that seats 51,800. (capacity of 52,235 with the yet to be marketed standing room.)

In Flushing, the Mets drew 36,124 to their building. The Mets website lists Citi Field as having a 45,000 capacity including standing room.  They have yet to sell standing room seats, so the more accurate number for today would be more like 42,000.

Is it the economy?  The disappointing 2008 results for both teams?   Overpriced seats?

We’ll see what happens when school lets out.

  1. The Mets don’t have to worry. As the season moves on they’ll get alot of sellouts. Many Yankee fans hate our new stadium and will go less or not at all. Citi is better than Shea. Yankee II is not better than the original.
