One Year Stadium Naming Rights Deals Are A Bad Idea

Even more annoying than a corporate stadium name, is a stadium name that changes all the time – like Joe Robbie/Pro Player/Dolphins/Dolphin/Land Shark Stadium.    Pick something and keep it.

“Dolphin Stadium president Bruce Schulze confirmed Friday that a naming rights deal with Land Shark Lager is likely. The Dolphins are expected to unveil the new name at a news conference next Friday.”
Financial terms of the deal have not been released.
The one-year deal by Land Shark shows that A-B and Buffett are looking to market the brand to a broader audience, given that the stadium will host the 2010 Super Bowl

  1. Corporate names when they first started weren't that bad — United Center, Delta Center for instance. One might never even've associated an airline with those. I never did at first.

Then it got ridiculous… ridiculously pathetic actually.

It's a sign of the times, of our culture. I do have the feeling that most fans don't care for the idiotic corporate names but those who make the decisions seem to think it's just fine and they don't care what people who pay for tickets think. Most will still pay to go.

It's just a shame. How long has Wrigley been Wrigley? Same with Fenway and Dodger and Lambeau? A few survive but we now live in a corporate world even more so than ever. Companies want to shove their products down our throats everywhere they possibly can.

And it's not just stadiums and arenas, it's summer music amphitheaters and even the names of music festivals themselves: New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival Presented by Shell. Look at what's happened with college football bowl games. Remember when we had the Citrus Bowl and the Gator Bowl? In NASCAR, there's barely a single race that has the same name from one year to the next anymore. Most grumble about a lot of this but overall they put up with it.

Not only do we have to put up with corporate names but with rotating corporate names. Some arenas and stadiums and amphitheaters are now on their 4th or 5th name!!!! Verizon Wireless seems to think it's okay to have 4 or 5 venues with their name on it. Remember when we knew a venue and place belonged together?! Now we can't even keep 'em straight. Again, how long has Fenway been Fenway? All this crap isn't needed. They'll argue it is but it should stop. Let's allow these buildings to forever be known by ONE name. Why not honor people with them? Instead, those will million dollar wallets feel the need to honor corporations. It's all BS. I love this country but this is one aspect of it that makes this place a craphole.
