"Citi Field Empty" Fan Protest

I got an email from the organizers of Citi Field Empty.

They are asking that Mets fans not show up for the game at Citi Field on September 8th to protest ownership, and create some embarrassing media coverage for the team.

..

My take:

The best they can hope for is a few mentions, probably on on-line versions of the newspaper columns.  They might even get a few today (a few reporters check out Mets Police, much like I check out the reporter blogs, and that’s how the world works).   Today being in essence a day after an off-day they might get a mention this morning – but once 12:10 hits that window will have closed.

Will the protest work?  Nope.  People aren’t going to eat their tickets.   Also, the mainstream media will just print that “39,000” attended the game.   See my posts from last year about a “Howie Rose 40,000.”  The paid attendance number is what gets reported.

Even if nobody showed, nothing would change.  Jeff Wilpon isn’t selling a baseball team just because people don’t like him.  In fact, I’d be more worried about a panic trade/signing to shut up the fans.  What the organization needs is someone with long term wisdom to decide if the potential of 10 years of Jon Niese (with the first 6 inexpensive) is greater than the value of a Roy Halladay.  That kind of thing.  Halladay shuts the fans up, but might be the wrong move.  See the 1980’s Yankees for the wrong way to do it, and the Gene Michael Yankees for the right way.

One of my deals with myself is that I don’t want to hurt the Mets.   The end goal of this blog is for the Mets to run off 10 straight championships while wearing blue pinstriped home uniforms – then I’ll throw a big party at the Tom Seaver statue in front of Citi Field and call it a day.   I want the Mets to succeed, I don’t wish to be an enemy of the franchise.

However, as the leader of the cranks – I felt I should share this one with you.

  1. the official statement from Remembering Shea is WTF?

the Mets don't need our help to embarrass themselves. i'd rather see an impromptu unofficial fan-generated Banner Day for the Mets fans to express themselves. i'd like to see the Wilpons sell the team, but that's better left expressed in a sign or banner.

this is the 2nd blog to post this (so far in my reading).
