Steroids On My Mind

With the Ortiz/Ramirez revelations coming out, I can’t help but think of steroids this morning.

I think about Bob Costas saying years ago, I think when his book came out, that unless you think all the greatest hitters of all time came along in 1995 then something has changed.
I think about New York City throwing a tickertape parade for Sammy Sosa.

I find myself thinking of other players on the 2003 Red Sox and how some players with alleged steroid ties such as Clemens or Bonds were already good before they started taking.   I think about how many players who allegedly took steroids were awesome for a few years and then broke down.

I think about what numbers the Mets might retire and I encourage them to be careful about one particular number.   At least with 16 and 17 we know what their sins were, and they’ve payed their penance.  Not everyone has.

I think about the column I’m going to write some day asking Mets fans if deep down they were really shocked that player x was on the list.   It’s going to be a sad day for the franchise.   That’s just one man’s opinion, and who I think it is I will keep to myself, but to quote Darth Vader, “Search your feelings.  You know it to be true.”
