For all the not-so-awesome things about the new Yankee Stadium (like
hiding Monument Park at the bottom of a cement stairwell that makes me
expect to see the L train at the other end), the best part of the new
$1.1 billion dollar state of the art stadium has to be the retractable
dome.
Imagine if they hadn't spent the money to have a world class building,
and there was a huge rainstorm coming.
Imagine trying to plan your life around attending the game Friday, or
will it be Saturday? Imagine sitting out on a cold October night
with a steady drizzle.
Chief meteorologist Craig Allen says they will try to use a window of
not-so-bad weather to get the game in. Fortunately the Yankees went
the extra mile, and fans will be able to sit in a nice dry warm seat
once they get inside.
Imagine a world without retractable dome technology. We could be
looking at two new baseball stadiums and new football stadium, all
exposed to the elements, with no hope of this area ever hosting a
Super Bowl. What a shame that would be.
