I was so down in the dumps yesterday about this franchise that I wanted to write about something positive. Â I couldn’t think of anything, other than trotting out the old yesteryear story, so I appealed to my friends on twitter (@metspolice).
Sadly, nobody had anything. Â Sure I got some good laughs: the best suggestion was “Aaron Heilmann isn’t a Met” which was right up there with “Angel Berroa turned 30.” Â On facebook, I heard there was a good turnout at the blood drive.
Personally, I’m excited about the McFadden’s bar coming to left field and perhaps some plans for the Blue Cap Army for Opening Day.
You may notice I have gone three paragraphs without mentioning anything positive about the actual team. Â Yeah, that’s the problem. Â I’m not feeling it this week.
However, over at Big League Stew on Yahoo today is the day where ‘Duk is going to link to Mets blogs, and I want to make a nice impression for the newbies. Â Can anyone think of anything happy in Flushing?
If you are a newbie, here’s some links from past articles to help you get the vibe of Mets Police:
- Pictures from the 1986 Tickertape Parade
- The Mets respond to a letter from The Mets Police
- It might make financial sense, but it sure is annoying to think Bobby Bonilla will get $1 million a year from the Mets from 2011-2035.
- The “about” page that explains what this is about.
I think there are positives, but they’re all going to be twisted and obscured right now, and all the question marks, even the small ones, feel like negatives until the games start.
How about this? The Mets _are_ still looking at other catchers, so any bluster about going with Santos is likely not true. I’m sure this holds the same for “We’re gonna go with Nieve” as well.
Where the media sees players not wanting to sign with the Mets, it could just as easily be a shrewd Minaya setting a value on these players and not exceeding it.
Keep in mind that last year, when the Mets were picked to win the World Series and they didn’t throw money at Pedro Martinez in the off season, most people agreed with the non-signing. With virtually the same situation, Smoltz doesn’t want to sign with the Mets, or doesn’t like the offer they made him instead? hmm.
I was one of those who picked the Mets last year (I had them losing to the NYYs in the WS) so you and Omar are right on that account. However it’s a year later and my eyes tell me Pelfrey and Maine aren’t ready to step up the way I thought they would. There’s an upgrade in LF but a downgrade at 1B even though I love Murphy. Also a year ago Carlos Beltran was going to be the star and play CF. He’s an irreplacable player. It would actually be easier to plug in someone at third.
I’m in the same boat. There is nothing to be cheery about with this franchise. The Mets are being avoided like the plague by 4th tier free agents. It’s a sad time and what makes things worse is that it won’t change. I remember when the Mets won the division in ’06 and Jeff Wilpon was interviewed in the clubhouse. I remember him saying “Hopefully in ten years people will say we did it the Mets way.” Even then I wondered…what is the Mets way? I still ask myself that question. Ownership is CLUELESS!! They will NEVER get it. Resign Tatis? The Mets are EPIC FAIL…as a Mets fan my whole life this is painfully obvious
Wow I like that mets way comment. You have inspired my next post!
I mean what was he referring to? Signing Beltran, Pedro, Wanger and trading for Delgado? sure we had Wright and Reyes as home grown products but seriously, what is he referring to? He thought this was the beginning of a Mets dynasty. In ten years time what a joke. Typical of the Mets ownership not having any vision for the future because honestly, what is he basing that on? Also, we won the division and he was talking as if we won the Series. Again, typical.
Off the top of my head, here are some Mets related things I’m looking forward to in 2010…
1) Watching Francouer for a whole season. Sure, he’s not a super star, but so far, I’ve liked his attitude as a Met.
2) Watching Oliver Perez throw the Mets first no hitter. Sure, he’ll walk a couple guys, there will be a steal and a passed ball and the Mets will wind up losing 1 to nothing, but still… there’s something about Ollie that just makes me think he’s gonna do it. Hey, it’s January… let me be an optimist!
3) Eating veggie dogs at the game! As a vegan, I’m super excited to finally be able to enjoy hot dogs at the ballpark.
4)A bar at Shea. I might need a bourbon before Met games in 2010… and if the games are anything like 2009… after as well.
Let’s go Mets!
There’s something about Francoeur. We all seem to sense it.
I’m also excited about the bar. I hope it is way better than Casey’s 37 was.
Im looking forward to the extra room because of the empty seats next to my Sunday 15 game plus plan that doesn’t include the Mets hall of fame day. I am looking forward to the shorter lines at Shake Shack and Smoke. Maybe I’ll have luck with the giveaways that rely on people who showed up at the park. I mean from what it sounds like from when I talked to the Ticket office there aren’t a lot of renewals or even new interest in tix. Yep I have a lot to look forward too.
