Challenge: name 10 third-basemen (ever) better than David Wright

Here’s some crazy talk for you….

…I was talking trash with some Braves fan and I obnoxiously said that David Wright is one of the Top 10 third basemen of all time!

Seems nuts, right?

Well let’s hear your list….you’re gonna rattle off like 4 and then have to start looking people up.  Yes I know there will be some other blogs calling me an idiot but this is all in fun…..ok, let’s hear it.  10 better than five time All Star David Wright.

I will spot you Schmidt (the best ever).   9 to go.  Go.

(..and yeah we were arguing about Larry Jones)

  1. Schmitt
    Brett
    Boggs
    Arod?

that is about it. Brooks robibson is better known for his glove, and one of all time fave Hubie Brooks cannot make the list. Yes, D Wright will go down as an upper echelon 3B.

  2. I’ll name 25 and say the first 15 are CLEARLY better.

    1) Brooks Robinson
    2) Pete Rose
    3) Wade Boggs
    4) Pie Traynor
    5) George Brett
    6) Eddie Matthews
    7) Alex Rodriquez
    8) Chipper Jones
    9) Home Run Baker
    10) Ron Santo
    11) Matt Williams
    12) Carney Lansford
    13) Scott Rolen
    14) Judy Johnson (negro leagues)
    15) Ray Dandridge (negro leagues)
    16) Jimmy Collins
    17) Stan Hack
    18) Craig Nettles
    19) Ken Boyer
    20) Darrell Evans
    21) Bill Madlock
    22) George Kell
    23) Bob Elliott
    24) Al Rosen
    25) and of course Michael Jack Schmidt

  3. Mike, I am not disagreeing with a bunch of your choices, but I will debate some. Ken Boyer? Great glove, not sure he is the hitter Wright is. Carney Lansford, no way. Without looking it up, Darrell Evans, was not the fielder Wright is. Bob Elliot? Stan Hack? Who the heck are they? I am a 46 year old baseball fan, who is as old school as anyone, but there is no way that Wright is not as good as two guys I have never heard of. Brooks Robinson (best fielding ever), Schmidt, Brett, Kell, Baker, Traynor, Boggs, Matthews, Rosen Dandridge, Johnson, Rodriguez, Santo, and Jones, all better than Wright. The rest, Madlock, Nettles, Rolen, etc, are only better than Wright at this point due to longevity. I would have to look and see how many games Rose played at third base to see if would have played there enough to automatically say he is better. He is obviously the better player, but the question was third baseman.

  4. Pete Rose:

1058 career games in the OF
    939 at 1B
    634 at 3B (mostly 1975-78, after which he was mostly a 1B)
    628 at 2B

I’m not sure I would think of Rose as a 3B, but he does have the fact that he played it during the Machine years in his favor.

Lansford, no way. Wright already has a better OPS+ (137-111) and nearly a better WAR (31-39.3). And Wright’s OPS+ is better than Santo’s (137-125) and should his career last as long, I’m sure he’ll surpass him in other categories (Santo’s WAR is 66.4). Santo averaged 25 HR per 162 games, Wright is currently at 27 per.
