The incredibly awkward video that features Gary Carter

Maybe I have been spending too much time in the basement, but although this has been on Deadspin and Big League Stew I haven’t seen it in the Metsosphere.

Here’s an incredibly awkward video of a fan and Gary Carter and some autographs.  I feel bad for Gary and I imagine that this sort of thing happens to players all the time.  It’s very easy to be placed in a no-win situation.

  1. That so called “fan” was a moron…. hundred bucks says he sold his kids signed pics on ebay….

  2. How big a jackass does one have to be to try to put the stink on OTHER people when he doesn’t respect the rules and format of an event? The guy was looking to stir up trouble, otherwise he wouldn’t have had the camera running in the first place.

And Pete’s probably right on the money (no pun intended). Seriously, how many 8-year-olds do you know who are itching for Gary Carter’s autograph?

  3. Wow – that guy really has it in for Carter. Makes me think that Carter ignored him back in 1986 and he has vowed to make it his life’s goal to humiliate him.
Seriously though, I’ve met Carter twice and he is generally very friendly – certainly a lot friendlier than several other HOFers that I have met who seem angered that they have to relate to fans at any level

  4. When you go to a FREE event you gotta play by their rules. If I pay for an autograph, which I occasionally do, then I want everything the way I want it because but at a Free fan event I’ll take what I can get. This is what you get in the age of Youtube. Everyone is Michael freakin’ Moore. I’m sure if you look around enough you can find someone “exposing” the corrupt “no refill” policy at a McDonalds in Pierre, South Dakota.

Upon a second viewing, Carter is also giving the first kid a presumably signed baseball card as well but you know what I never heard in the whole video. “Please”

  5. Dammit Shannon you’ve ruined my whole morning with this video. Every viewing unearths more hilarity. In the description of the video the guy brings Jesus Christ into it. Phenomenal!!!

  6. Wow. That was nuts. Gary came to my company once as a motivational speaker and he was nothing but nice. He signed anything and everything for us. He even signed a Polaroid (remember those) of me with him. Then we had a 20 minute conversation on coaching teenagers…I can’t believe some idiot fans can’t respect simple rules. If it says no pics, then its no pics. Just be happy he gave you the time of day. You sign your name for 3 days and see how much fun that would be…

  7. It looks like this backfired on the guy who put this on youtube. Most people who I’ve talked to are coming to Carter’s defense and feel that in their dealings with him, he has always been generally a nice guy.
