This post is wrong…updated info here about which Mad Man is the Mets fan…but I like the show so much and this started a conversation so I’m leaving it up.
I was watching Mad Men the other night and saw this pennant hanging up in Pete Campbell’s office. The episode takes place in 1964 so hopefully Pete is going to catch some games at brand new Shea Stadium!
Here’s some Mad Men Mets audio for ya.
Don has to be a Yankees fan. He is old school and doesn’t like Cassius Clay and Joe Namath, so he’s not going to like a team with a big headed mascot. Don is all about pinstripes I’m sure.
That scene was actually in Layne Price’s office, not Pete’s. Kinda cool considering the character is British. In my experience, English don’t think too highly of baseball.
As a Mad Men obsessive and detail-oriented Mets fan, I’m just going to go ahead and be That Guy and point out the following:
1) The pennant is in Lane’s office, not Pete’s. Lane’s the Brit who has fallen in love with New York. Kenny Cosgrove has attended at least two Mets games we know of (in 1962 and 1963). I have a theory that Lane and Ken attended a game at Shea, maybe even enjoying drinks in the Charcoal Room afterwards, to plot Ken’s return to Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce. Infer what you like about Pete’s or Don’s allegiances, neither has shown any interest in either local team.
2) The episode takes place in early May 1965, not 1964.
3) The pennant you show is not the pennant we see. The pennant we see is this one.
Damn, someone just policed the mets police.
Thats ok – the site is about community – I loved Greg’s answer!
Since, Mr. Mets was still only an artistically rendered mascot in ’65, I would assume advertising agency’s personnel would be intrigued by the Mets “big headed mascot.”
