John posted the below in the comments.
I have no idea if John’s version is accurate or the Deadspin version that was widely circulated is accurate or both are or neither are….but here’s an interesting version of the plane ride.
I’ve posted this on the other sites, and I’ll post it again here. Yes, Omar was on Jet Blue Flight 907 from JFK to O’Hare, but no, he was not heckled.
I saw Omar in the terminal before pre-boarding, and I approached him and we had a short, polite conversation, and I had my photo taken with him.
Later, as we began to board many of the Mets fans on the flight approached me to discuss my experience in meeting him. They asked me if I said anything about Frenchy or firing Manuel, etc. I know Omar talked to two (2) other Mets fans who approached him in the terminal, and he was polite as well.
Omar was one of the last to board the plane. He came on board and did not make any rucus nor did he boast who he was. He sat there by himself and he put on his headphones. After the flight landed (when the photo was taken on the Deadspin site), he got off the plane and was talking with three (3) other people with whom he was traveling.
Therefore, long story short is Omar was polite to the two Mets fans that approached him, and the Mets fans approached me to talk about my experience. No one heckeled him at all. The person from Deadspin had a blackberry camera and an idea for a funny story. Would have been great if it was true.
The whole story reeked of exaggeration. I don’t read deadspin often anyway and I wasn’t going to call anyone out on it, but this account sounds much more believable to me.
It follows suit with people wanting to scream and yell on the internet, but being much more timid in person.
I don’t doubt they all said things to each other, but there was no heckling of Omar.
Yep, he’s absolutely right. I was also on the same flight (he sat 4 rows behind me & my wife) and there was definitely no heckling.
