Mets shouldn’t rule out trading promising youngsters – NYPOST.com

We’ve talked about this in the past – both on the site and the podcast.  This franchise should consider everyone as on the table.  I like Ike and I love home grown players, but Joel Sherman makes a lot of sense here:

Before the position has way more supply than demand, the Mets should, at the least, see if Davis can return a long-term rotation piece, second baseman or potential replacement to Reyes (a free agent after next year). The Mets could then stopgap for 2011 with a free agent such as Lyle Overbay, Carlos Pena, Adam LaRoche or Derrek Lee — all of whom would offer similar production to Davis. And then — thinking big picture — the Mets should be predetermined to solve first base long-term after the 2011 campaign with a true difference-making free agent from among Albert Pujols, Prince Fielder and Adrian Gonzalez.

  1. I’m not sure I like that plan. How do we (or the Mets brass) know that Pujols, Fielder, and/or Gonzalez will even be available then? If I were the Cards I would sign Prince Albert now and not wait; same with the Padres and Adrian (now that they’re back to winning). I don’t know the impact Prince has on Milwaukee but I would think they would want to lock him up.

How about signing Reyes to a deal (so we don’t have to worry about his replacement) and then keep Davis? This way the Mets will have the players they want. Just a thought.

  2. Any else sick of David Wright looking foolish against good pitchers? He has no chance against Oswalt. This is the “face” of the organization?

  3. The Mets need a creative GM with full control.

The team we have isn’t good enough to compete with the Phillies or the Braves. We don’t have much more help coming from the farm system in the short term. The Wilpons are not going to spend like the Yankees, so no free agents until some of the bad contracts come off the books.

The only avenue left to improve is the trade market. Everybody, from Ike Davis to David Wright, should be tradeable. Being conservative and hanging onto players just because they are popular and/or young is probably not going to get us a better team.
