One good thing about having to put the Christmas Tree away…I went into the attic and “found” my Mets VHS’s. Yeah I knew they were there but figured they’d be cool to blog.
I know Game 1 is somewhere as is the NLCS.
I remember I used to sometimes take the commercials out because I was a teenager and didn’t have an infinite supply of VHS tapes. However, I bet at least some of these have the commercials left in – especially Game 6 because I watched that in the living room with my Dad (well until the Top of the 10th when I went to my bedroom depressed), and I always taped in my room.
I know this series is out on DVD but as we will see next Tuesday…I have other goodies in my closet.
I was taking a test during the ninth inning of game 6 of the NCLS, was taping the game. Then when I was getting ready to do the sports report on the college radio station, I realized that I was going to run out of tape, and I was not prepared for an extra long game, and did not have any more blanks, I had to race home & tape over the beginning of another game.
Great memory – isn’t that stuff funny. I was scrambling for tapes all the time as you will see as I show the rest of my collection as the weeks go by.
I’m a little younger but remember when you would have to “Sophie’s Choice” your tapes when there were no other options.
I was in my college infirmary with mono during Game 6 of the NLCS…but I watched every inning! And back home…my Mom taped every game for me. I still have the VHS tapes as well. Great memories!
I had to watch Game Six of the WS on tape…only part of the game I saw live was the top of the tenth. It was the only time in seven years of college radio that we could not get anyone to work a football game…and one of the few times that the stations equipment all worked. The guy working in the studio running the board, had a TV in the studio giving updates. I was very bummed as the second half started and the Mets were about to lose to the Red Sox…the team that was “cursed”…as the tenth inning went on, and Hernandez made the second out, I wanted to walk out of the booth right there…I was ready to whole up and hibernate. Then as the base hits started to come, the calls for updates came faster and faster…I can still hear the words of the update like they were yesterday…”In one of the most remarkable comebacks in World Series history…
Start of great few sports months…Mets win their second world series, ASU earns & wins its first Rose Bowl, and the Giants win their first Super Bowl.
It’s funny, at the time it seems more important to record the big games for posterity (I did it too), but now all of those games are available on dvd and re-aired on SNY. These days, I wish I had recorded some random mid season games that featured a standard broadcast with the regular announcers.
Every summer, I say I’m going to DVR some random regular-season game (as if there’s been any other kind recently) just so I can watch it in the dead of winter.
I have a tape “Baseball 1995” of random at bats of various people. The idea at the time was so that down the road I could show Junior clips of whoever I thought was important that summer.
Vertigone, and especially when it is now at the point where we have all seen the same games 9,000x. I know it is weird, but I for one would love to see games like the Steve Henderson game. I would love to see even games like the Bobby Jones game. There are a bunch of games, I am sure the folks that read this site can come up with, that are not the WS games. Heck, how about the 69 NLCS. I love watching them beat the Red Sox, the Matt Franco game, but lets see some different games, ones that are a little less clear in our minds.
I’d love it if SNY even showed “random Mets game” Mets-Astros from July 19, 1990. They could even lose.
I have some Mets games on DVD from 1990 & 1991. Let me know. I can make a copy for $10
I went to game 7 and before I left, I set my VCR on extended play and left explicit instruction to my wife not to touch anything on the TV !!
I ended up getting all the pre-game stuff, the entire celebration and the local newscast afterwards.
I know that tape is somewhere.
I have some Mets games on DVD like the final season of 1991 against Philly w/ David Cone striking out 19 to tie up a Mets record. I also have a 1988 season game against the Phillies when the Mets win the division, and a 1990 Mets game against the Pirates. Let me know if any one is interested and I can make a VHS copy for $10 shipped.
