Today on Alternate Caps (a series which is already more popular in 2011 than it was the last few years) we have this submission from Randy at The Apple.
While “better” than yesterday’s cap in that it lacks the Mets written all over it…and “better” than the hybrid* because we can see the NY, it suffers from blue+black makes the blue look purple. Oh I also don’t like The Apple’s watermark…that’s some sneaky marketing. That’s like randomly sticking fellow bloggers in an episode of How I Met The Mets just to get them to write about it.

* For the newbies: “Hybrid” is the Mets black cap with the blue bill that the team is obsessed with. It is a “hybrid” because it is neither blue nor black. I don’t recall who invented the term, might’ve been UniWatch, might’ve been a reader, could have even been me. My issues with it are that it includes black, blue+black looks purple, and the NY doesn’t “pop” on TV although it does if you are in the same room as someone wearing it.

However, Randy has opened up a whole new world of “generic content” – the fan designed cap. Oh wait, I just realized as I typed that that I am ripping off UniWatch again. Their comments section will yell at me. Don’t send me any DIY caps. Lukas likes me, he is excited about the Treaty of Flushing. **
** The Treaty of Flushing will take place on a subway car. Me, Howie Rose and Paul Lukas will meet with Fred, Jeff and Dave Howard. We will have nice traditional blackless uniforms during the week, and the Mets can wear Whatever Goes Sundays. Sell whatever. I agree to never post about the subject again. Maybe.
Love this cap! Were I High King of the Mets, I would abolish the blue cap with the orange NY logo and replace it with this (as well as scrapping any and all pinstripe uniforms). This better represents the Mets origins that combine the colors of the New York Giants with those of the Brooklyn Dodgers (neither of which wore pinstripes for at least a quarter century prior to their departure for California). And you can see the NY logo on this cap! Bet I’m in the minority on this site though.
Your “better representation” argument is weak until you can demonstrate all instances of the Brooklyn Dodgers ever wearing orange.
Blue = Dodgers. Orange = Giants. Home uni with script = Dodgers. Road uni lettering = Giants. As the cap logo itself came from the Giants, the original unis actually leaned more towards the Polo Grounds than Ebbets Field.
I regret that I cannot support The Apple’s proposed cap. I’m just not feeling it. The orange “NY” looks got lost and wandered onto the wrong hat.
If there must be a two-tone, and if the insignia must be more visible, I still have to go with this option:
