Ah, March…the weather is warm, my new jerseys have arrived in the mail and it’s time to be optimistic.
I know it’s strangely fun to daydream about the Mets fire-sale and another summer of soap opera in Flushing…but what if this is 1984?
Maybe Pelfrey is real? Maybe Jon Niese can step it up. Maybe Chris Young’s pitches were moving as much as I thought they were when I saw him myself last Sunday. Maybe Santana does come back – and even if he isn’t lights out, but we do know the man has guts.
Maybe Terry is the right guy. I’m sensing a scrappy like-able club, something I haven’t been able to say about lots of Mets team, and some of those were winning teams.
Maybe Ike hits 20 again.
Someone will play second base..and my money is with Murph winning over the fanbase.
Perhaps contract years for Reyes and Beltran work the magic that contract years often do.
Maybe David Wright plays more like Shea Stadium’s David Wright.
Jason Bay isn’t going to hit 6 home runs again.
Maybe scrappy sparkplug Angel Pagan stays healthy and sparky
Maybe it won’t matter who catches.
Maybe K-Rod will man up and play better.
Couldn’t that team actually win some games? Couldn’t the Phillies run into bad luck? Look at the 1990 Mets – they went to war with Viola, Gooden, Cone, Sid and Darling..and a 28 year old Strawberry who hit 37 HRs when 37 HRs was a steroid-era-60.
Ya Gotta Believe, right?
I’m upping my prediction from 83-79 to 90-72.
I’ll assume you meant to write ‘I’m upping my prediction from 83-79 to 90-72.’
.’
I can see a scenario where they win 90 games. If they play better on the road then they did last year, sure – why not?
And KRod pitched very well last year. It’s not his in season ‘play’ that needs to improve.
SRT what am I missing, did I phrase something wrong or do bad math?
I’m glad for all sources of optimism about the Mets these days – we certainly need it.
Wouldn’t it be something if your prediction proves true?
There’s no reason this team can’t be competitive, but if it wins 90, Collins should have his number retired.
That must be some strong KOOL AID!…I have been to almost every game and we are playing our starting lineups and they are playing their minor leauge (Single A) players.
There must have been 10 Maybes and a few ifs.
Sorry this team is nothing but a 4th place team and at best an almost.500 team.
Cheers!!
They’re way better than last year’s .500 team which would’ve been better if they’d had a manager.
You can’t find me a team without a handful of ifs and a bucketful of maybes.
This team will compete all season long.
Yes we will compete…for 4th or 5th place!
We have NO Pitching…Hello!..Mike Pelfrey is not a #1…Need I get into any more about that.
RA Dickey was better last year, except for Halladay, than anyone on the Phillies.
