Sherman suggests all-out Mets fire-sale is the way to go

Interesting read that proposes trading…well, anyone you have heard of.

But the two executives felt even a stripped-down version of the Mets still would draw no worse than two million spectators to Citi Field. ….

“Banks like to see operating profits over losses and it also would eliminate the need to plug holes in operating costs, which is what forced them to seek extra loans from Major League Baseball.”

2 million?  They drew 2.6 last year…do you think the Mets could fall below that number?  Be logical not emotional.

  1. I do not think that they will fall below 2 million people.

They did drop 600K from last year though. It would send a message to the owners about high ticket prices and putting a lousy product on the field.

Its about time fans said “enough is enough” If the wealthy owners are not spending their money on a respectable product, why should fans spend theirs.

Do you like going to games knowing that the owners of the team did NOTHING to improve the team over last years 4th place finish.

I would not buy a plan for this team. I would selectively pick and choose games and buy undervalue tickets for the games I want to go to.

This year in Spring Training, they are not drawing really well (except Red Sox game) and I have gotten into 4 games so far for $5.00

Better to buy a cheap ticket from a fan than pay the teams overinflated prices.

  2. Johan Santana and Jason Bay are untradeable due to their contracts. To reach the $70 million figure that Sherman cites, you’d have to move David Wright, Mike Pelfrey, Angel Pagan and pretty much any other recognizable players.

If the team is Bay, Santana & a bunch of fringe guys making $1 million or less & the ticket prices stay the same, I wouldn’t want to go watch them. I could see them falling below the two million attendance threshold if they are too aggressive in any firesale proceedings.

  3. That struck me as a bury-the-Mets piece, but payroll aside, Sherman’s spot on in that the team can finish in 3rd place with a new group as well as it can with the current one. The franchise could (and I’ve argued should) already be two years into the future, but instead we’re still running Slappy and Ollie out there, comparing Jose Reyes to Tom Seaver, and pinning hopes on sentiment instead of good sense.
