As an interesting aside, Swirsky has what he claims to be a note from 86 Red Sox manager John McNamara regarding the Buckner Ball. The text of that note follows:

Seth:I hate to remember the 86 W.S. — it still is bitter. Bill Buckner is not to blame for that loss as we had chances to score more & didnt capitalize; The wild pitch or passed ball that tied the game was the “major” factor in that inning. The ground ball just ended the game.John

    had geldman caught the “wild “pitch”
    they could had picked off ray knight.
    he had a big lead toward third and marty barret was no where near 2nd base!!
    also boston won the first 2 games !
