Rickey Henderson’s blackless Mets uniform in TV ad

Kevin writes..

Hey Shannon,

Check out this screengrab of an MLB commercial. Rickey Henderson in Mets/A’s/Yanks uniform.
Notice the Mets uni he has on — one he never officially wore.

That’s really odd because the maker of the commercial would have to have gone out of their way to get a dropshadowless Mets jersey, no?

Does anyone know the director of the commercial? I’d like to poke at this.

  1. As nice as it is to see the proper Mets home jersey, I doubt one would be difficult to find. It’s likely the wardrobe department at the production company didn’t have the current one but had one of these lying around.

(On a somewhat related note, did anyone else notice that the BBHOF in Cooperstown, in the room where all of the teams’ current uniforms were displayed in lockers [adjacent to that mini-theater on the 2nd floor], had the Mets’ 1993/’94 home and road jerseys on display, long after they were discontinued, even as all the other teams’ displayed unis were updated, until around 2001?)

Also, clothing can be created and added digitally, so it may be a digital jersey.

It’s possible the producers just figured that Rickey played for the Mets a while back, and selected a generic “old” jersey design without giving any thought to whether it matched the years he played here. (They may not be uni-geeks like us…)

I’d like to think it’s a more positive sign, but there have been plenty of those over the last decade, and we’ve been disappointed every time.

  2. I just checked by Cooperstown pics from 2001, and it looks like even then they still had the drop-shadowless pinstripe jersey on display, along with the blue cap and helmet, and a contemporaneous black jacket.

I’ll have to dig up my pics from 2000 and 1999 later….

  3. For what it’s worth, when I was there this past summer, the Mets’ locker contained a game used John Franco jersey from 2001.

    1. Meaning they probably just used what the wardrobe department had lying around. I don’t think RA had the contract when Rickey played for the Yankees either.

  4. Circa 1999, the “official” NL style guide still listed blue caps and pins as the primary home look of the Mets, though they were only worn a handful of times that season. (That was true until the introduction of the cream pins last year, actually.) Was Rickey on the roster in ’98? The reason I ask is that the black drop shadow wasn’t added to the pinstripe uniform until 1999 — I remember Piazza and Hundley doing an interview together, in the post-’95 style blue BP jerseys, during a Monday afternoon rainout makeup game vs. the Astros. During the game that followed, the mets wore the classic pins. May have been Mike’s only appearance in that uniform. They still used the “real” pins in ’98, but only broke them out once or twice that season.
