Duke’s Grill at Citi Field?

Greg Prince reminds us of an early concept for Citi Field and even has an artists rendition…

Across from the Ebbets Club was something named Duke’s Grill. It was presumably a placeholder, penciled in to give us an idea of what we were in for. I was less impressed by the grill than I was wary of Duke’s. We already knew we were in for an Ebbets Field facade and an Ebbets Club and a Jackie Robinson Rotunda. Duke’s Grill, too?

  1. Well, the original name for Left Field Landing was “Coogan’s Landing”. (Polo Grounds was at Coogan’s Bluff)

  2. True enough. Here was the original writeup from mets.com:

Various areas of Citi Field will reinforce the setting of the venue and the Mets connection to the City of New York and baseball history, including: the Ebbets Club behind the plate, Coogan’s Landing beyond the leftfield fence, the “East Side” stands in rightfield, and “The Orchard” picnic area in centerfield.

There was never a mockup of Coogan’s Landing, however, as there was for Duke’s Grill. Nor did the East Side Stands and the Orchard ever see light of day under those names. Ebbets Club made it for one year.

      1. I guess that’s what’s become the group-only Outfield Terrace off the Big Apple Seats, unless that’s the area between the Big Apple Seats and the north end of the bridge.

A friend of mine figures Coogan’s Landing failed to ignite and that Left Field Landing was intended to be temporary en route to a sponsorship deal. I suppose that materialized for two sections this year with the BJ’s Club House thing.

Which almost never has anybody in “it,” incidentally, Mr. Met visit notwithstanding.

        1. Outfield Terrace of course Shea Bridge Terrace. It used to be easier to keep the names straight when it was Field Level, Loge, Mezzanine and Upper Deck.
