What’s the deal with the pipe smoking dog outside Citi Field?

Hey Shannon,

Enjoy reading your site. I figured you would be the guy to reach out to on this one… What’s the deal with that dog that sits outside of Citi Field with the pipe in its mouth? The dog is really nice, and when I first saw it outside of the stadium, I thought it was a great idea by the owner. But, I’ve gone to 3 games this year, and each time, there has been a different man with the dog. Now, he has a sign saying something like “The only people I don’t like are cheap people,” but it’s clear the money isn’t going to the Humane Society or any type of charity. Do you know what the deal is? Any background on this? Love Mets, love dogs, but I’m not giving money to some people who force their dog to outside for hours. Just curious.

Have a great day… Let’s Sweep the Dodgers!

Pete

I often see this dog too, and i love dogs…I have no idea. I have pics somewhere..I bet you guys do too. Anyone know the story?

Update May 12th: I see people getting passionate about this one..I see the Facebook page…I see the comments….I’m going to dive in on this when I can. I’m a big dog lover.

ANOTHER UPDATE:

So I see all the arguments where people are worried for the dog. I’d like to know more. What I fear is this becomes a “thing” and the dog winds up in a cage (or worse) at the ASPCA. When I see the dog he seems content.

Is there anyone who knows more about the dog owner’s side?

Dave sent in this picture he took when visiting Citi from Hollywood.

  1. pretty sure i have seen pictures of this dog decked out in Yankee garb at the stadium in the bronx. Its a money grab.

  2. Yeah this dog is definitely abused. It is inhumane & unnatural for a dog to be forced to sit for hours on end with a pipe in its mouth with no water or rest.

BPalm, also this dog is paraded around Yankees Stadium when the Mets are on the road.

This is a serious matter. We saw the dog on Mother’s Day & it was so tired it went to lay down, & instantly popped back up & looked at the owner with fear in its eyes. This is how I knew something was wrong.

    1. Joe….I am happy to hear that the dog was “saved”, however just because he won some kind of a dog competition does not mean that this is not abuse. I want a close up picture from someone to see how the pipe stays in his mouth and how much of his nose is covered up too. This does seem to be a form of abuse to me, inhumane maybe not, but UNFAIR abuse YES!!!

    2. Just because the owner saved the dog, does not mean that he isn’t abusing him by making him sit like that for hours without water or movement. No one would like to be treated like that. Maybe he got the dog just to have him do this. So, he was on a spanish speaking show. Still doesn’t make this less cruel.

    3. This is soooooo wrong on soooo many levels. This dog should not have to wear a shock collar with silly garb, sit for hours, and keep a stupid pipe in the mouth. Where is PETA???

  3. Abuse isn’t just physical theres different kinds. Why should mans best friend be treated so horribly. This dog is not allowed off its mat, it sits there for HOURS on end, holding the pipe in its mouth not allowed to drink anything, plastic nose covering his making it even harder to breath. How would any of you feel if you had something blocking your nose, holding a pipe in your mouth for what feels like forever. Thats no life for an animal. Think how your jaw alone would feel constantly closed on something. Not to mention how hot it gets out there. The dog stays on its mat out of fear not training.

  4. It’s cruel to make a dog sit still without shade or water- dressed – dogs do not sweat like we do- and with a pipe sticking in her mouth – God only knows how it stays there. This needs to be checked by the Humane Society.

  5. That dog is actually not abused. Coffee actually made an appearance on the spanish television show, Sabado Gigante or Giant Saturday on Univision and won a dog competition. The owner saved that dogs life. Appearances aren’t everything and people should actually find out the real story before making claims like its inhumane or something like that.

  6. People are up in arms because it’s not natural for a dog to want to sit there for hours and NOT have to pant… or to want to sit up for a long period of time…. and check the shock collar under the bandana… THAT is what the issue as about. Nothing cute about it.

  7. Yes it is animal cruelty, it is being abused, it is not normal or fair for this dog to be forced to sit there against its will, it isnt normal to dress a dog up like this, when it goes to lie down, it pops back up cos it is being ‘shocked’, it cant even lie down to rest. i would love to meet the bastard that is doing this, HE SAVED THE DOG’S LIFE?????? rubbish he is using the dog to get him money – i think you will find that is slavery.i hope the dog turns around a bites his fucking balls off. JOe sorry bud but you dont know what your talking about. SO he was on a tele show… so what, he is using the dog for financial gain and using illegal unfair and abusive techniques.

  8. I have heard about Coffee and am in the UK. I have read here that Coffee is seen with different “handlers” and rakes in a lot of money, Lord knows where this cash goes…….. I also see on here someone mentioned when poor Coffee got tired and went to lay down, she “popped back up looking at the handler with fear in her eyes”……..Classic response from an electric shock collar. I have seen the photo of poor Coffee wearing the hidden collar beneath her bandanna……The handlers appear to get bothered when someone tries to check on her or get too close to her, therefor hiding the truth of the electric shock collar. Also, dogs need to have their mouths open to pant and allow their body to cool, they cannot sweat/perspire like we do – you tell me, is it natural for a dog to sit bolt upright for hours on end, in the same spot, fearful of moving, clamping a pipe in his/her jaws for fear of being given an electric shock? This is wrong, plain wrong. The dog needs to be a dog and needs a better life away from exploitation. Open your eyes America, open your eyes…….

  9. This IS animal abuse. Would you do this to a human child? Would it still be ok then? NO! Anyone who thinks this is ok is sick. Go put a shock collar on your neck on the highest setting and see how that feels.

  10. ASPCA and the police better start doing something. SAVE THE DOG. Investigate that greedy dog abuser. I read someone saw fear in the eyes of the dog and that makes me sad and angry. Sitting in one spot with a pipe seems very uncomfortable and stressful for the poor dog.

  11. Of course this is abuse! Just because the dog was on TV, that doesn’t make it right. This dog is shocked when she tries to move. She has no teeth. How does the owner make the pipe stay in her mouth for hours on end? Do you think this is natural for a dog??? This dog needs to be taken away immediately. This poor dog has been suffering this abuse for years!

  12. There are plenty of photos showing that the dogs teeth have been removed and the pipe stuck into her mouth. There are also photos in evidence showing that a remote collar is how she is forced to stay sitting up. Please help this animal, as this is animal cruelty.

  13. The hell with the petitions, and pictures! Why doesn’t someone who lives on the East Coast and goes to the games just go up and snatch the dog? Take that damned collar off her. If you get Coffee and can’t keep her, I will pay to have her flown to California, where she will enjoy a good home, and live a long life.
