SI Article says Mets payroll could go down 30%

I think we kinda knew this already (didn’t we?) but I like watching everyone panic so here you go…

Fred Wilpon acknowledged to Sports Illustrated that the payroll could go down about 30 percent next offseason.

If the Mets’ payroll is roughly $140 million this year, that means $98 million next year.

  1. If the Mets fall out of the race and start dumping salary, there is only one choice…total boycott. Make Shea II a ghost town in August through October. Send the message to Fred and Jeffy…sell while you can still get anything for this thing.

    1. You say that as if the park wouldn’t be a ghost town from August through October anyway.

$140M has only gotten the Mets heartache. Short-sighted GMs thinking throwing money on top of the mess would fix it hasn’t worked in my lifetime despite constant efforts. Spending less money more wisely is worth a shot as much as any other alternative.

  2. The $100 million payroll mark that Fred Wilpon mentions in the article wouldn’t be so bad… except for the fact that two-thirds of it is already spent on Johan Santana, Jason Bay, David Wright, R.A. Dickey, D.J. Carrasco & K-Rod’s buyout.

Go watch the Mets this season. Next year could be even worse.

    1. We’ve grown accustomed to next year being worse. The payroll hasn’t seemed to make a difference either way.

    2. K-Rod’s buy-out is going to be moot. The 2012 $17.5 million option will be guaranteed if Rodriguez:
-55 games finished in 2011, and
-100 games finished in 2010-11, and
-doctors declare Rodriguez healthy after 2011

      1. If the Mets don’t keep the option from vesting, say goodbye to Pelfrey, Pagan & everyone else who will earn more than major league minimum.
