My $50,000 plan for 1986 day with a surprise ending

Have a day for the 1986ers and introduce Carter last. It’s a nice neat 25th anniversary.

I know it’s supposedly expensive to get players to come to Queens, but let’s take a look at that.

Hernandez and Darling – walk down three flights of stairs. Burkhardt can help Gary in the tv booth for half an hour. Free.

Mookie – stand exactly where you are. Free.

Darryl – seems to be in Citi every other game. Here’s car service. $200

Gooden – local. Car service $200.

Ojeda – 7 train is 10 blocks from work. Here’s a metro card. $5.

Backman and Teufel. They work for the organization. I’ll pick them up in my car.

Knight, Foster, Santana, Sid, Hojo, Mitchell – no idea where they are. $700 flight and $200 hotel. call it $6000

Sisk and Aguilera. You just spent the money on them. Do it again. Call it $2000

Ed Hearn – flight and hotel $1000. I think he’s in KC.

McDowell – do it when the Braves are in to save a buck. Free.

Lenny – can’t make it.

Mazzilli the Yankee – car service local $200

Carter and his family. $5000.

Whoever I forgot because I’m stupid. $3000.

$18,000ish. Let’s add the “I have no idea what I’m talking about” factor and nearly triple it to an even 50 grand.

$50,000. That’s a lot of money.

Now let’s sell $20 tickets. Twenty x 2500 is 50,000

There’s not 2500 Mets fans who would show up?

I know a lot of you let me down last year on Hall of Fame Day, but 2500? Seems manageable. Plus maybe the Mets could get a sponsor.

So now we have the old crew back and we invite them out on the field one at a time like baseball teams do sometimes.

Second last player announced is Keith Hernandez. Keith mugs for the camera, we all smile.

Last, Gary Carter.

Place erupts.

But then…Howie shocks the crowd and announces the Mets will retire the numbers of their two captains.

Place erupts.

  1. I like it….”It just makes to much sense for the Mets!”…You are a legend in your own mind!

    LETS GO METS!!!…KEEP WINNING!

  2. Go into PR. This is the most awesome idea, ever. You can’t tell me it wouldn’t be a SRO crowd and people would be in tears.

  3. I have no memory of Carter being a co-captain. I remember Keith wearing that C…did Gary ever wear it?

You forgot Jesse…need to re-enact the glove toss.

Seriously though, I don’t think those guys come to breakeven…they need to make some money on it. You don’t need Foster…he was an outcast.

  4. I say Straw should have his number retired before those two.. Darryl is still the all time leader in HR, RBI, and extra base hits.. Second in Runs.. He has not played for the Mets in over 20 years and he still holds those records.
