Welcome to 80’s week…an opportunity for me to combine the All Star Break, lack of news, some travel and some nostalgia into a “I worked ahead” theme week. Don’t worry, @mediagoon ([email protected]) will cover breaking news and I’m not dead, just travel-challenged…anyways, last year’s 70’s week was a hoot so let’s kick it off:
Now the fun starts!
if you look at the stats 83 showed signs of the future – they played .500 at home (41-41 – why an extra game btw?) and from August 1 through the end of the season they played .500 ball. Remember being excited when Darling came up – Terrell was up the whole year so we got to see the returns on the Mazz trade (sorry MetsPolice) on display.
Still cannot fathom the logic of not protecting Seaver – he could only have helped that 84 club and it wasnt Seaver vs. Gooden – Davey Johnson knew the day he got the job that Gooden was able to pitch in the majors.
History would have been changed if Seaver stayed…perhaps with his veteran leadership, the Mets win in 1985 or even 1984. Perhaps he would not have been a good fit on a young team and caused rifts…I certainly don’t see Seaver fitting in with the “Bad Guys” of 1986. All in all, I would rather have the second championship than having Seaver for the last two years or so.
I have concluded that this promo was probably not be from 1983. First clue was that how could you make a 1983 promo without Seaver? You put Mike Scott, 7-13 with a 5.14 ERA in 1982, instead of Seaver? Mike Scott who was traded in December 1982???
The only times the Mets played the Braves on a Tuesday in 1983 were in July…by then the Mets had Seaver, Strawberry and Hernandez…wouldn’t they be in the promo at that point instead of Houston Astro Mike Scott? It could be a promo for a spring training game, but you still would have Seaver in there and not Scott.
Either this is from 1982, or channel 9 was run by an incompetent in 1983.
