Idea: Sponsornamehere Dana Brand Mets Banner Day August 20th

MetsMom with a suggestion below.  If you don’t know about Dana read here and here.

At the Dana Brand Life Celebration @ Shea’s home plate,  organized by Lynn Cohen.  I know Ðave Howard reads your blog, so what do you think — the Dana Brand Memorial Banner Day?  At the very least they should have a Dana Brand Memorial Book Shelf in one of the stores, filled with all the books about the Mets.

Shannon here: Wow Mets Mom you’re putting me on the spot.

I think Dana was really neat and I would love to see him honored.  I can’t imagine in a million years that we’d go from NO Banner Day to one named after Dana.  I doubt they’d do the bookshelf either, don’t forget we had to berate them for a year to honor actual Mets.

So let’s split the conversation:

Banner Day: just have it.  One more.  I think we’re now beyond fearing “Mets Are Idiots!” banners now that the clownfest has ended.

Think about it, how many anti-Wilpon chants have their been in Queens?  None?

Put a terms and conditions on the parade.  Signs must be positive in nature and no advertising your blog.  At worst…at WORST…you’ll eat one story in the paper about some fan who was turned away with his “Hey Ho Fred must go” banner and Dave Howard can give a quote along the lines of, “We felt the spirit of Banner Day going back to the foundation of the club has always been that it’s a family event in which parents and children share their love of the Mets.”

Your lawyers have already worked out the language.

Banners are permitted at Citi Field, subject to certain conditions. They may not be hung from any level in fair territory or block the view of any fan. Banners may not be connected to poles of any type, and poles will not be permitted into the ballpark. Fans are not permitted to display their banners on levels or in areas other than where their ticket admits them. The Mets reserve the right in their absolute discretion to remove banners containing inappropriate or offensive language or images or commercial messages, or that the Mets otherwise determine to be inappropriate for any reason.

That rule is in effect every day and nobody accuses you of censorship.  The same rule should apply to the parade in your house.

Anyway, I suspect you’d only see loving signs about this 2011 bunch, I really do. Well and some Keep Jose banners, but what’s wrong with that?

If nobody shows up then shame on us all and we’ll drop this one.  Come on Dave.  One more.  Saturday August 20th (there’s no giveaway that day) while school is still out.  Say 5pm before the 7pm game?   Hell let people walk the track during BP..it’s just logistics.  It can be done.  Have three security guards guard the path back to the dugout.  I can even imagine this group of players liking seeing the fans adore them.  Don’t be afraid.

Could you imagine Howie Rose on WFAN giving the play-by-play of Banner Day. I think my banner would simply say “Thank you for brining back Banner Day!” (DyHrdMet in a comment from over the weekend.)

As for Dana, I didn’t know him well, but I think the best thing we can do is do whatever we can do to fulfill the dream of The 50th Anniversary of the New York Mets Conference at Hofstra.

  1. By the time Aug 20th rolls around, the Mets will be so far back that you will need “Every Sheet Available” to cover the dead body before burial

Yes I like the idea of banner day, but I think it needs to be held earlier in the year and be a regular scheduled event.

Would love to see the banners if there was no censoring!

  2. I remember as a young kid, around 6 or 7, trying to come up with a good banner with my father. Never made one though…but gee why would the Mets want to create memories like that? It is too much trouble and why have a doubleheader? That’s a long day.

  3. More often than not, they seemed to have Banner Day in June during the 1980s. I never made one, but I sure liked watching them go around a lot more than I’ve enjoyed any feature coming out of Diamondvision. Except maybe for Professor Reyes lessons en Espanol.
