Seaver, Kiner and others thank Veterans today at Citi

Cool stuff…and although I can’t make it, Media Goon is leaving the 41st Precinct to head over to Citi with his fancy camera technology so hopefully we’ll have some photos and video.  Plus Howie is back.  Man I’d love me some Seaver time but gotta pay the bills elsewhere.

CITI AND THE METS ALUMNI ASSOCIATION PRESENTED BY CITI TO HONOR AND THANK U.S. VETERANS AT CITI FIELD LUNCHEON

Tom Seaver and Ralph Kiner Among Legends to Join Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America Volunteers at Luncheon and Panel Moderated by Mets Broadcaster Howie Rose

FLUSHING, N.Y., August 4, 2011 – Citi and the New York Mets Alumni Association Presented by Citi today announced that they will team up tomorrow Friday, August 5, at Citi Field to honor and thank U.S. veterans at a luncheon and panel discussion with Mets alumni, including Hall of Famers Tom Seaver and Ralph Kiner.  Additionally, the Mets and Citi will honor the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), the country’s first and largest non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to improving the lives of the more than 2.2 million veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan and their families. The project is part of the Mets and Citi’s “Teammates in the Community” initiative, reflecting their ongoing commitment to be active participants in the community.

Seaver and Kiner will be joined by fellow Mets alumni Bud Harrelson, Ed Kranepool, Ed Charles and Joe Pignatano in a panel moderated by Howie Rose, the radio voice of the Mets on Sports Radio 66 WFAN.

“Citi is proud to honor the courageous men and women who have served, and those who continue to serve, our nation in the Armed Forces for all of their contributions and sacrifices,” said Suni Harford, Managing Director and Citigroup’s Regional Head of Markets for North America.  “We believe we should honor our veterans and servicemen and women every single day. Citi humbly offers its gratitude to veterans and active duty members of the military who are attending today’s event, as well as those stationed around the world, and their families.”

The luncheon will also include members of the Citi Military Veterans Network, an organization founded by and comprised of Citi employees who are committed to both furthering the interests and assisting the needs of veterans currently employed by the bank and enjoying the company of their colleagues as well as the greater community of veterans.

Citi actively works with veterans through its Citi Veterans Initiative, a U.S.-based program designed to support the service members of our military and their families and veterans in communities across the country.  More than 440 Citi employees in 12 cities have engaged in volunteering and fundraising activities over the past year as part of the initiative, including programs designed to provide assistance with resume writing, networking and mentoring for veterans who are transitioning back into civilian life.

Tomorrow, during the Mets game against the Atlanta Braves at Citi Field, Mets Alumni will work alongside the Citi Military Veterans Network and IAVA volunteers to encourage fans to sign cards for service members.

Additionally, the Mets Alumni and Citi executives will present IAVA volunteer Maria Canales with the “Teammates in the Community Award” during a special pre-game ceremony.  The award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary ways to give back to the community, and Canales will be honored for her exemplary commitment and dedication to serving and helping others.  She has been a key volunteer for IAVA, giving her time to support important events like Veterans Day and Pat’s Run, as well as other veterans’ events in New York City.

“Citi and the Mets are leading examples of how companies can work together on the ground to support this newest generation of veterans,” said IAVA Founder and Executive Director Paul Rieckhoff.  “Over 2.2 million Americans have served in Iraq and Afghanistan, and local outreach through ‘Teammates in the Community’ helps to empower and connect these veterans in a fun, meaningful way in their own communities. The Citi Military Veterans Network and Citi Veterans Initiative have also been critical in welcoming veterans home by easing their often-difficult transition from combat to career.  This project is a critical opportunity to expand outreach and resources to New York veterans who are facing some of the highest veteran unemployment rates in the country.  As a nation, we must support these men and women who continue to sacrifice daily for our country, and IAVA is proud to partner with Citi and the Mets to show them we’ve got their backs.”
