In response to a question about spending at a level comparable to the Yankees, Alderson said: “We can’t spend at will the same way they can spend. And we’re not going to attempt to try to do that, at least not over the next several years. Our revenues, basically we’ve got to get people back in the ballpark to generate the kind of revenues that would be needed to have an even larger payroll. But the fact is, even at $100 million or $110 million, we’re still in the upper echelon of payrolls. That ought to allow us plenty of latitude.”
You might want to buy yourself a Reyes jersey while you can. As Rubin’s article reminds you – Santana, Bay and Wright tie up $55 million next year. Say Jose takes $15m, that leaves you $40m for 21 guys.
of course, Sandy’s mentioned numbers like 130 before too. so I wouldnt’ read too much into it.
He mentioned the 130 million early in the season when at least some people were showing up to the park.
Now that the place is a ghost town and Spring Training 2012 has started, as well as football, I think the above numbers are real.
It is really sad to see the place so empty on TV and then uou read the box score and it says 30,000
What is sitting in the seats is irrelevant as to finances, what is, is the 30,000 tickets they sold
$100 million is plenty enough to win in the NL. They’re certainly not getting their money’s worth at the current $140 million. Spending wisely is far more important than spending freely.
Based on Keith’s slip the other day, it seems viewership is way down…that may be the crusher here…how much money is SNY making and will make with ratings dropping?
Maybe they can pass the hat during the games or put out glass jars at the concessionb stands and collect “Loose Change”!
