If he catches that ball, Mookie may have beaten him to the bag anyway…if not, the game would have gone to the 11th. He didn’t lose it…he got a bum rap.
Steve is correct. The game was tied at that point. Buckner is a class act. Also was hysterical on curb your enthusiasm
Naturally it’s the play that stands out in people’s minds, because it won the biggest game in Mets history, and capped one of the greatest post season comebacks. In truth, if there’s someone to blame, we have to look at the Red Sox manager, who might have made the defensive substitution at 1B.
But more than that, here is a 7 game series, with multiple goats to choose from, on both sides. Hanging this on Buckner is almost as silly as Cubs fans hanging their team’s loss to the Marlins on that fan, Steve Bartman.
It is so unfair to Bill Buckner that all anyone talks about him is that one play because he had such a great career. If it was not for him the Red Sox may not of even made it that far.
