MLS Commissioner Don Garber came out and confirmed this week that there will be a $100 million dollar expansion fee for whoever does buy the New York franchise. If the Wilpons decide to pay the expansion fee, they will be paying twice as much as any other owner paid for an MLS team. At the moment it is hard to see this happening, since Wilpon told Sports Illustrated in May that the Mets are carrying $427 million in debt and may lose as much as $70 million this year. In addition to the expansion fee, Wilpon must also find a way to fund the Willets Point stadium, most likely with little help from a cash-strapped government.
