This date in ’86: Gary Carter’s big day – Mets Blog – ESPN New York

Actually this date was yesterday, but I was out on the soccer fields all day and then had to fight the Joker (9 hours until Protocol Ten)…

The Mets had a significant advantage in the starting pitching matchup, with Ron Darling going against Boston’s No. 5 starter, Al Nipper. (Their No. 4 starter, Tom Seaver, missed the postseason due to injury.)

Can you imagine if Tom had pitched in that series?

I remember as teenagers we had kind of let go of Tom.  The second coming and going broke of us any romanticism.  We would have rooted for Tom to get hit by an asteroid if that’s what it took to bag that World Series so we could finally shut up our dump Yankees fans friends who had known nothing but success since we were all 7.
