The Last Icon — Tom Seaver and his Times — Lived Up To My Expectations | SPORTSOLOGY

I Castillo’d this one – I knew this book was coming out and meant to contact the author, but this summer/fall has been so busy that it got off my radar.  Anyways, the folks at Sportsology read the book…

The quotes in this book are great, I learned about a Vietnam controversy that Tom was involved in and because of my young age I never knew about it. There are a ton of Nancy Seaver quotes, which I always find interesting, I always thought the New York press treated her unfairly and this book proved that for sure.

  1. It was not Ed Hearn, but Barry Lyons who aborted Seaver’s comeback by going 6 for 6 in a simulated game. Hearn was in KC by then. It led to one of the great lines from Lyons…”I should make the Simulated Hall of Fame”

  2. i don’t recall the press being too un fair he was the young golden boy with a pretty wife. they ,as i recall had various opinions about things that were going on in the world and talked about it. at least they were not built up the way steve & cyndi garvey were built up in the media in 1974. heck i thought they would have they’re own sitcom !
tom seaver let the world know he was more than a young base ball player with lots of talent. as i recall when martin luthur king was murdered in 1968, seaver led the cause to have the mets giants game home opener moved back a few days out of respect for dr. king in san francisco..
