David Wright not going anywhere

Folks folks folks calm down…and with all due respect to Joel Sherman who knows way way more about baseball than my fat stupid self, and actually talks to executives in Flushing, let’s look at what is really being said here….

“We will listen on Wright for sure,” a Mets official told me during the week. “We know we are not going to win it all in 2012. We have to hope the Phillies get old and we are in position to take advantage of that in 2013-14, and we have to figure out ways to speed the process to get there.”

In other words, if the Mets could find the young, defensive-oriented center fielder they crave plus an arm or two in exchange for Wright, they will seriously consider it.

via David Wright of Mets could be traded – NYPOST.com.

The somewhat troubling part is the “we know we are not going to win it all in 2012.”  I like the philosophy of winning the World Series, but right now this is such a mess that I think it’s wise to be realistic.  The Mets are one achy shoulder away from RA Dickey being the Opening Day starter.

But back to the quote.

Sure, if the Mets get offered a CFer and two pitchers they will listen.  If Dave Howard offers me 100 grand for my blog I will listen.  If you want to pay me a million dollars for my house I will listen.  If the Phillies offer the Yankees Cliff Lee, Roy Halladay and Ryan Howard for Robinson Cano then the Yankees will listen.

I’m willing to discuss all sorts of things.  So are the Mets.

David Wright isn’t going anywhere and will a Mets lifer.  Book it.

….

But let’s Devil’s Advocate this one and say the Mets do trade Wright and get a “defensive-oriented” CFer and an arm (or two).

I think you’ve all finally wrapped your heads around the notion that Reyes is a goner.

So you’d be looking at a 2012 team with exactly who as your stars Santana, Ike and Dickey?  That really is 1978 as some of us have been debating on twitter.

This is the first semi-meaty post I’ve done in a while so I thought I’d take the time to slip in some good vibes I’m hearing about “Mets Police” type items.  Our long journey may be nearing its end.

Wright isn’t going anywhere.

  1. David Wright will definitely be a Met on Opening Day. Coming off the worst season of his career, Wright’s trade value just is at its lowest.

I’d be surprised to see him moved mid-season, because he’d be a half-season rental unless whatever team acquired him could work out a contract extension.

But it’s far too soon to say that Wright is a Mets lifer – and if he doesn’t return to at least the levels he played at in 2008 and 2010, he’s not part of the solution.
