From that same auction, some Gil Hodges action. Clearly the Mets had the uniform scheme right at first before they started messing around and adding colors such as black. Who knows, maybe someday…..
On the left front tail of the road flannel jersey is the “Wilson” manufacturer’s tag with wash instructions and jersey size “44”. Inside the rear collar is a grey strip tag with “14-44-1971” done in blue chain stitch indicating the manager’s number, jersey size and year, respectively. Across the front is “NEW YORK”. Manager’s number “14” appears on both the front and back. All numbers and letters are done in blue on orange tackle twill. On the left sleeve is the team embroidered disc patch. Inside the waistband on the flannel road pants is the “Wilson” manufacturer’s tag with wash instructions and size “36”. Adjacent is a grey strip tag with “14-36-1971” done in blue chain stitch indicating manager’s number, pants size and year, respectively. The uniform shows wear and appears to have no alterations of any kind.
Believe it or not, this may be the last in a long series of uniform rant/observation posts. You read Rubin yesterday, and I’m holding out on some stuff from you guys which is killing me but I do it for good reason. Soon enough my friends, soon enough.
I maybe biased, but that uniform is the nicest in the history of sports.
If the Mets are going back to it, it would be really nice to duplicate that road number font…it’s not hard…it’s a Wilson Varsity font, still used today by the Braves for one. It is different from the home numbers. Also would be nice to restore the patch to its glory.
