Seaver is starting to seem old to me

If you read Mets Police every day you know this site is mostly about the off-field experience as a fan, so I write this with the utmost resepct, but Tom Seaver is seeming old to me.

A friend of mine pointed it out to me a few months back, and I stayed in denial, all the way through most of Studio 42.

Tom tends to give long answers now and lose his way as he goes along.  A few times Costas threw out a question and Tom gave a great answer, just not the answer to what Bob asked.  At the end of the special they cut to a clip of Tom’s HOF speech and there was the sharp pointed Tom I remembered.

This post isn’t about picking on Tom, it’s about making sure we appreciate Tom all we can.  (Much like we do with Kiner.)

I hung on every word of the special last night.  Did you hear him speak about Gil?  Damn, I want to meet Gil Hodges.  Every time Tom speaks of Gil I wonder what might have been, a common theme for Mets fans and for Tom himself when he spoke of the Imperfect Game.

Did you catch the part where they showed Tom on June 15, 1977?  Compare that the reaction of Jose Reyes last week and you tell me which one is The Franchise.  44 years later Tom was tearing up watching it.

I totally forgot that the Yankees brought in Lindsay Nelson to call Seaver’s 300th win.  I was out chasing a girl that day and Osh41 is still mad at me for not taping the game.  Sorry Osh, try eBay.

Your takeaway if you’re say under 40, which I know you are….Tom pointed out he could come back now and go 0-20 for five years and still have a winning record.  Amazin’

What a great special.  I guess we have to talk about loans and negativity for a few hours.  I do have some uniform stuff coming up and then I’m heading to the Holiday Party so it won’t be all doom and gloom around these parts.  There’s plenty of other sites if you want to run the Wilpons out of town.

….

Random thought…we were talking about Murphy on twitter last night.  He is Santa today.  So I said, “The Mets wouldn’t be stupid enough to open themselves to Mets Trade Santa headli…..oh wait, eff.”

They wouldn’t make Murphy Santa if they thought they’d deal him, would they?

  1. Wasn’t it great Shannon? That’s my whole childhood there. Yes, Tom’s changed a lot in 5 years…I have a photo of myself with him in 2007 that shows it…but he is not old to me…that’s all relative.

BTW, on the show, Tom asked Costas if he had anything to show from when Tom went back onto the field after the celebration…Costas did not, but I do, courtesy of the great George Kalinsky and my extensive Met archives.

      1. Well, it amounts to every yearbook from 1969-2010…the Kalinsky Book…Honig’s 25th Anniversary Book…the 25th Anniversary Video (which BTW as a reward to Shannon, I have a friend making a DVD for you)…other assorted publications gathered over 40 years.

I also have one of the oldest pieces of Met Memorabilia possible…it pre-dates their first home game…I can take a photo and tell you the story of it if you are interested.

      2. Here is a scan from the 1972 Yearbook…Tom grew up in Fresno and seemed to be in awe of Willie McCovey…he told that great story to Costas…reminded me of this picture…Tom is wearing Willie’s jersey! Is Paul Lukas reading this?

  2. It was still incredible, watching the Master again.  He’s not old, he’s seasoned.  The Franchise would have a few things to teach Mike, Bobby, Jon and Dillon, I’m sure.  They should pull up a stool and listen at the Master’s knee.

  3. That was a great show last night! It brought back some fond memories. I loved it when he said that the 69 Mets would beat the Orioles 7 out of 10 times!

I can watch Cleon Jones catch that ball and take a knee 1000 times!

  4. looked like a man bored with talking about the mets. he is 67 years old and base ball is a little behind him said seaver “i don’t watch games, i have too many other things to do”. the sit down chat with costas was to make us mets fans happy (mission acomplished)  he has a life outside of the game. even when he played,he had a vibe about him where u got the impression,he was about more than the game. today,he is not a coach or broadcaster. heaven knows, im sure he has had tons of offers for both.

    1. Gotta remember for him that baseball was “work”. He even called it driving to work. I can understand being bored with the stories.
He still gets emotional though! So down about 77 and so proud of 300.
