The folks over at Amazin’ Avenue remind us that…
The clubs lost a reported $70 million and has had to take out more than one loan, but the New York Mets actually saw player payroll rise 11.51%. At $142,244,744 they ended the season ranked 5th behind only the Yankees, Red Sox, Phillies, and Angels.
So remember while you are screaming about the payroll that just because you spend it doesn’t mean you win. The 2011 Mets, led by a batting title winning Jose Reyes, finished 4th.
Most of that payroll was spoken for years ago with bad long term contract signings, so I believe your statement is a bit misleading. However, I do agree that if the money is spent correctly you can win with a low payroll.
After saying that I still feel that this is a bigtime LAST place team! The division has gotten alot tougher and we just dont stand a chance with the players we have.
If you are going to run with a low payroll, you need to have good pitching. The Mets don’t.
I think only around $100 million actually went to players who appeared in games for the 2011 Mets…way to go Omar.
That would be an interesting stat to break out
