Obvious this week’s lead story is the one none of us wanted, the passing of Gary Carter.
Also this week, the Mets added Josh Lewin to the radio booth, announced some ticket details and dates for bobbleheads, and a new role for Mookie Wilson.

Gary Carter
The words of the Mets family.
TOM SEAVER: “No one loved the game of baseball more than Gary Carter. No one enjoyed playing the game of baseball more than Gary Carter. He wore his heart on his sleeve every inning he played. He gave you 110 percent and played the most grueling position on the field and that was something special.”
MOOKIE WILSON: “The one thing I remember about Gary was his smile. He loved life and loved to play the game of baseball.”
GENERAL MANGER FRANK CASHEN: “The genesis of the trade was that we wanted to add a big bat to the lineup. He did that right away, but perhaps more importantly was the way he handled our young pitchers. He was the perfect guy for so many reasons.”
MANAGER DAVEY JOHNSON: “Gary was a one-man scouting system. What people didn’t know was that he kept an individual book on every batter in the National League. He was the ideal catcher for our young pitching staff.”
DARRYL STRAWBERRY: “What he added to the team was character. His approach to the game was contagious. It spread to the rest of us. He helped each of us understand what it took to win.”
DWIGHT GOODEN: “I relied on Gary for everything when I was on the mound including location, what pitch to throw and when. Even when I didn’t have my best stuff, he found a way to get me through the game. He was just a warrior on the field.”
WALLY BACKMAN: “He was like a big brother to me. I always went to him for advice. No matter what time of day it was, he always had time for you.”
TIM TEUFEL: “The baseball community has lost a Hall of Fame player and a Hall of Fame person. He was a good man and will be missed terribly.”
For me, the first thing that came to mind was Gary’s first game at Shea as a Met and the extra inning home run. I was there that day and clearly the 85 Mets would build upon 1984’s foundation.
Click here to view a clip of that home run.
STATEMENT FROM METS CHAIRMAN & CEO FRED WILPON, PRESIDENT SAUL KATZ, AND COO JEFF WILPON REGARDING GARY CARTER
“On behalf of everyone at the Mets, we extend our deepest and heartfelt condolences to Gary’s family — his wife Sandy, daughters Christy and Kimmy and son D.J. His nickname ‘The Kid’ captured how Gary approached life. He did everything with enthusiasm and with gusto on and off the field. His smile was infectious. He guided our young pitching staff to the World Series title in 1986 and he devoted an equal amount of time and energy raising awareness for a multitude of charities and community causes. He was a Hall of Famer in everything he did.”

Each Mets legend in the bobblehead series represents a different decade in Mets history:
Tom Seaver Bobblehead Presented by Citi – Sunday, April 22 at 1:10 p.m. vs. Giants
Seaver will kick off the bobblehead series when the Mets play the San Francisco Giants Sunday, April 22 at 1:10 p.m. Seaver is the club’s all-time leader in wins (198), ERA (2.57) and strikeouts (2,541). The Hall of Famer went 25-7 and won the first of three Cy Young Awards in 1969, helping the Mets stun the baseball world by winning the World Series. A 12-time All-Star, Seaver had his number retired when he was inducted into the Mets Hall of Fame in 1988. Following seven seasons as a Mets TV broadcaster, Seaver is entering his seventh season as a club ambassador.
Rusty Staub Bobblehead Presented by GEICO – Saturday, May 26 at 1:10 p.m. vs. Padres
The Mets will celebrate the 1970s with a Rusty Staub bobblehead Saturday, May 26 when the Mets host the San Diego Padres at 1:10 p.m. A six-time All-Star, Staub helped the Mets return to the World Series in 1973. He hit three home runs in the NLCS and then batted .423 with six RBI in the seven-game World Series. In 1975, he became the first player in franchise history to drive in 100 or more runs in a single season. Staub, who was elected to the Mets Hall of Fame in 1986, has spent the past 12 years working for the organization as a club ambassador.
Keith Hernandez Bobblehead Presented by Gold’s – Sunday, June 17 at 1:10 p.m. vs. Reds
Keith Hernandez will represent the 1980s and be commemorated with a bobblehead for the first time Sunday, June 17 when the Mets face the Cincinnati Reds at 1:10 p.m. Hernandez played seven years with the Mets and helped the team capture the 1986 World Series. An 11-time Gold Glove winner, Hernandez is among the club’s all-time leaders in RBI (468) and batting average (.297). He was elected to the Mets Hall of Fame in 1997. Hernandez is entering his seventh season as a game analyst on SNY’s Mets telecasts.
Edgardo Alfonzo Bobblehead Presented by Verizon – Saturday, July 21 at 1:10 p.m. vs. Dodgers
The 1990s will be celebrated with an Edgardo Alfonzo bobblehead Saturday, July 21 with the Mets-Los Angeles Dodgers game at 1:10 p.m. Alfonzo ranks among the club’s all-time leaders in home runs (120), RBI (538) and extra-base hits (346). He flourished on the big stage, ranking as the team’s all-time postseason leader in RBI (17) hits (26) and runs scored (15). Alfonzo enjoyed the single greatest game in team history, going 6-6 with three home runs and five RBI on August 30, 1999 at Houston.
Mike Piazza Bobblehead – Saturday, August 25 at 1:10 p.m. vs. Astros
Mike Piazza will be featured as the final bobblehead of the series Saturday, August 25 when the Mets face the Houston Astros at 1:10 p.m. The greatest home run-hitting catcher of all-time played with the Mets from 1998-2005. Piazza, a 12-time All-Star, ranks among the club’s leaders in virtually every offensive category. Piazza hit .412 with two home runs in the 2000 NLCS to help the Mets advance to the World Series. His memorable home run in the Mets first game back after the terrorist attacks in 2001 helped the community begin the healing process.

Josh Lewin added to Mets radio booth
I’m excited about Josh who seems like a good fit and has nice manners (he tweeted me back). Josh is @joshlewinstuff on twitter…and I’m @metspolice
NEW YORK, N.Y., February 14, 2012 – Sports Radio 66 WFAN New York – the flagship station for New York Mets baseball – and the New York Metstoday named play-by-play veteran Josh Lewin to the 2012 Mets radio broadcast team. Lewin will join Howie Rose in the booth.
Lewin, 43, has 16 years of Major League Baseball broadcast experience, calling games for the Baltimore Orioles, Chicago Cubs, Detroit Tigers and most recently, Texas Rangers. Lewin served as the Rangers television play-by-play announcer from 2002-2010. He also has been part of FOX’s Saturday national television baseball coverage since 1996 and announced both American League and National League postseason games for the network. Lewin also hosted a mid-day sports talk show on CBS Radio’s KRLD-FM in Dallas in 2011-2012.
“It’s exciting to be part of the Mets’ broadcast team with Howie Rose, who is one of the best in the business,” Lewin said. “It’s a thrill to be able to come back to my roots in New York and call games for the team I rooted for as a kid on the pre-eminent sports talk radio station in the country.”
“Josh brings extensive experience and knowledge to the broadcasts and is a tremendous addition to the Mets’ radio booth,” said Mark Chernoff, Vice President Programming, CBS Radio New York and WFAN’s Operations Manager.
“Our exceptional radio broadcasts have long been a point of tradition and pride for Mets fans,” said Dave Howard, Executive Vice President, Business Operations, New York Mets. “We are confident Josh will be a welcome addition to that tradition.”
Lewin has served as the radio play-by-play voice for the National Football League’s San Diego Chargers since 2005 and will continue in that role. He also has called games for the National Hockey League’s Dallas Stars and multiple major college basketball programs during his 17-year career. Lewin got his start at the age of 16 with the Triple-A Rochester Red Wings.
A 1990 graduate of Northwestern University, Lewin has written two baseball books, “Getting in the Game,” and “You Never Forget Your First.”
Sports Radio 66 WFAN has been the flagship station for Mets radio broadcasts since the station’s inception in 1987.

Gary Carter Remembered By the Montreal Canadiens
As part of a pregame tribute to Gary Carter, each member of the Montreal Canadiens hockey team sported No. 8 jerseys bearing Carter’s last name during warmups prior to Sunday’s home game against the New Jersey Devils.
The jerseys worn for the pregame skate — the Canadiens’ red sweaters with the blue and white stripes around the center — will all be auctioned off later this week, with proceeds benefitting the Gary Carter Foundation.

Mookie Wilson still with the organization
Media Goon fielded this post and said: It’s good to see Mookie stay with the Mets. I remember when he used to be a greeter at the old Joe’s Seafood Restaurant (Saints and Sinners Pub is now in that location) here in Woodside during the the 1981 baseball strike. Yes it is true. I am glad he gets to stay in Queens with the Mets.
FLUSHING, N.Y., February 21, 2012 – The New York Mets today announced Mookie Wilson, one of the most popular figures in club history, will continue to work for the organization in a role that includes both baseball and business duties.
Wilson, who first put on a Mets uniform in September 1980, will be in spring training to work with the major league and minor league players. The former outfielder also will visit the Mets’ minor league affiliates during the season.
On the business side, Wilson will be a club ambassador representing the Mets at sponsorship and charitable events in spring training and the regular season.
“I look forward to both roles,” Wilson, 56, said. “I am glad to be back. I will get a chance to work with the players in the spring and during the year. Plus, I will be able to look at some of our younger players, which I love doing.
“This year we will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of Mets baseball and I’m looking forward to getting out there and talking to fans both at the ballpark and in the community,” he continued.
Wilson was inducted into the Mets Hall of Fame in 1996 and was voted a member of the 40th Anniversary Team in 2002.
Since joining the Mets, Wilson has been a player, coach, minor league manager and a member of the Community Outreach Department.
