Mets Police 1990’s Week: talk of buying out Bonilla’s contract

It’s 1999 and things are rocky with BB again.  Well, it’s not like they’ll wind up paying this guy into the 2030’s.  Just get rid of him already!

General Manager Steve Phillips indicated that he was not to the point that he would ask the team’s owners for permission to release Bonilla and eat the rest of a contract that will pay him $5.9 million both this season and next. Bonilla sounded as if he would not be hurt by a release.

”They could buy out the entire contract,” Bonilla said. But only for the full amount? ”Absolutely,” he said.
