Tips if you’re visiting Citi Field for the first time (2013 All Star Game)

2013_All-Star_Game_LogoHi, and welcome to Queens!

If you poke around the site, especially on the top ribbon you’ll find various information about both the All Star Game and Citi Field.

In this post I will cover some quick top-of-mind tips.

1.  Stay in Manhattan

If you have come this far you should do the full New York City experience.  Spend the money and try to stay in mid-town.  No its not cheap, and “real” New Yorkers avoid the area, but the tourists seem to love Times Square so you might as well do so too.  That will make it easy for you to…

2.  Take the 7 train to the game

Don’t listen to any other advice. Don’t drive.  Don’t take a bus.  Don’t take a ferry.  Don’t take a cab (God, no).  Take the 7 train.   It’s not 1977, you aren’t going to be mugged or killed.  It’s the best way to get around the city and to get to Citi Field.

The stop is Willets Point/Mets.  It will be where everyone else gets off.  I have seen lots of tourists think that the stadium is 10 feet outside Manhattan.  It isn’t.  You have about half an hour to look out the window.  Don’t worry, there’s no way you won’t see the stadium coming and miss your stop.

citiapple3.  Take your picture with The Apple.

When you get off the subway you will come across this apple.  Take a picture with it.

4.  If you have time enter through the Rotunda

That’s the main gate.  In the picture here it’s next to the Apple (you will walk past the Apple and straight ahead.)  There’s no way you miss the gate.  If you find the lines long and you just want to get in quickly head to the right and you’ll come across the little used RF gate.

5.  Immediately inside the Rotunda Gate take another picture with the 42.

It’s behind the escalators and honors Jackie Robinson

6.  Visit the Mets Museum

Also on that main level, to the right.  Walk around and learn about Mets history.  We fans had to nag the hell out of the Mets to have any Mets history in the stadium (long story) so now that it’s there please pay your respects.

7.  Go up the escalator and head to center field

I find heading left is slightly faster than heading right.  Go to center field and see all the food offerings.

8.  Skip the Shake Shack

Everyone talks about Shake Shack and yes it is yummy, but as a rare visitor to Citi Field I am going to recommend you skip it because the long lines will use up way too much of your limited time in the stadium.  I like the Taqueria which is in the same area.  Big Apple Brews has a nice selection.  Mets Police reminds you to drink responsibly, and never to drink and drive, but hopefully you listened and took the subway.

9.  Hang out on Shea Bridge (that’s our metal thing in center field)

The situation may be different because there are standing room tickets being sold that normally aren’t , so I am not sure what you’ll find, but normally the fans meet up on the bridge

10.  Wear your jersey!

Mets Police are big fans of jerseys, so if you are Captain Pirates or Mr. Rockies or King of Orioles I encourage you to wear your gear,  Mets fans are not jerks and we aren’t going to be mean to you because you like the Twins.  Be proud, be respectful, be cool, and we will treat you the same way.

  1. Awesome post except quit telling people to go to my gate (RF) hahahahahahaha

  2. Don’t buy ant The 7 Line t – shirts. It’s played out and you can get more original shirts at How About Those Mets website and they are cheaper too.

  3. Keith’s Grill burgers are much better than Shake Shack burgers. Plus, they come with a lollypop.
