Another year in shackles for the Mets general manager | Capital New York

mets money

Yesterday as I was upsetting twitter (@metspolice) with The Narrative that some fans are buying into that the 2013 Mets are “better” despite being on pace for the same 74 wins I reached out to Howard Megdal for support.

I personally don’t believe the Mets are going to bring in any significant players in the off-season.

Despite the starting position looking mighty promising (so did Generation K) I think the team needs upgrades at almost every position.

The only place they are set is third.

I would argue they are fine at second and in theory have a catcher coming (maybe one of us should see d’Arnaud play before we decide anything) – but they could use upgrades everywhere else.

Ike has 6 homers.

Lagares can field but what’s the offense going to settle in at?

The reality of EY may not be as exciting as his speed.

Anyways…read the entire Megdal piece, and a reminder it is from August 1st so some of the stats have changed although I think the premise holds.

Alderson is much too smart to believe Eric Young, the 28-year-old with the 77 O.P.S.+ and below-average fielding, is as good as it gets. The approach-conscious Alderson and his staff will also be well aware that Lagares solid output, more than sufficient given his elite fielding in center field, has come despite just five unintentional walks in his first 195 plate appearances, and a likely unsustainable .358 batting average on balls in play .476 over these supposedly transformative last 28 days.

  1. For what its worth, I’m in agreement with you. A lot of fellow fans are giddy, and hey, I love the pitching too, but you have to score runs to win games. We don’t have enough good position players to do that.
