No Conspiracy: The Mets Needed To Make Wright Captain | The John Delcos New York Mets Report
There is a conspiracy theory everywhere you look. I read one suggesting the Mets made David Wright captain to divert attention away from the field, where they are projected to be bad. Very bad. C’mon. Are you serious?

Actually yes I am serious. I think the job of the manager is to keep distractions away from his players. For example, Bobby V was very good at drawing the attention to himself.
The announcement was inevitable, and Terry used it yesterday to buy himself the Friday papers. Nobody reads on Saturday. He needs some good news by Sunday or the newspaper crowd will be back.
And plenty of good seats are still available.

Oh, so THAT’S why they used the number one. The back is designed to look like the back of a jersey. This would have been even cooler if they could have personalized it with my last name but I’m sure that would have been tedious and more expensive. Maybe next year, when Opening Day upper deck tickets are $126.

Captain distraction?
I have been blogging for 5 years now, but have watched this team since 1977 and I couldn’t help but wonder about the timing of David Wright’s captaincy.
I suggest no grand conspiracy…but why a sudden low-key announcement on a random afternoon? No pre-warning that the Mets would announce something on Thursday. Just an “oh yeah and David is the Captain.”
I learned from West Wing that there is something called Take Out The Trash Day. Put out some bad news when nobody is looking and if you can distract with something else.
David Wright is the new Captain…oh and Santana is probably gonna be on the DL but we’re not ready to actually admit that yet…oh and Marcum might not be ready but hey he has this injury all the time it’s cool….and there is no outfield…and now there’s no infield….and Flushing still thinks things are priced correctly.
I think Terry picked yesterday to buy time. I don’t think the beat reporters are that easily distracted. The fans might be, but the beat guys won’t be.
Plenty of good seats available.

Congratulations David, touch ’em all, you deserve it. You also deserve better.
Mets Name Wright Captain
I am glad there isn’t going to be a “C” on the jersey, I hate, hate, hate, that look. It seems so out of place. Did I mention I hate it? Cool for Wright. And just remember what Shannon told you guys last year, face of the franchise.(For the most part I hate it when Shannon is right.)
From the @mets twitter feed- David Wright
“I take this seriously. We’ll all in agreement there won’t be a C on the jersey.”
“I was lucky I played with the Mets last captain Johnny Franco. I learned a lot from my teammates.I’d like to speak with Johnny and Keith Hernandez to listen to any advice they might have for me.Wright. One of the proudest days of my career. To be viewed this way. It’s a short list of guys who have been captain in our history.”
The direction the Mets are taking? Excited? Trying to revamp the game so outfielders aren’t needed?
“I try to lead by example. I’m crazy excited about the direction we are headed.”
At least the tickets for Opening day don’t start at $63. Wait? What? They do? Seriously? With no outfield? YEESH…
