Olbermann makes a good point here. Ryan had imploded in the second half of the season (not spoken by Keith; Ryan had an alarming 15 HBP that season as well); the decision, in and of itself, to trade him is not a “what were they thinking???!!!!” moment. However, I’d also agree that neither, necessarily, is preferring to deal him instead of Gentry. Looking at their numbers up to that point, I could see wanting to keep Gentry over Ryan. Fact of the matter is GMs don’t have crystal balls. This is one of the most egregious examples of that, sure, but it doesn’t change the fact — they don’t.
