This Day In Mets Infamy With Rusty: The “Believe It – Or Not ” Edition

zack wheeler

So the news just broke that Zach Wheeler will most likely require Tommy John surgery to repair a  tear in his UCL in his pitching elbow. He is the fifth Mets pitcher in the last 3 seasons to require this procedure. The others being Matt Harvey and Jeremy Hefner two years ago, Bobby Parnell last season, and of course Josh Edgin who was diagnosed just last week. I know what you’re thinking to yourself “F#@KING UNBELIEVEABLE !!!!”

Well with myself being a fountain of useless information on almost everything Mets I figured I’d  bestow some other tidbits of Mets history on you which may impress other Mets fans ( but most likely won’t)

Both Rusty Staub and Gary Sheffield hit homers before they were 20 and after they were 40 ( their last homers came as Mets) – the only other player to do that was Ty Cobb. Believe it or not !

Of the 20 men to ever manage the Mets nine have also played for them. They are Gil Hodges, Yogi Berra, Bobby Valentine, Dallas Green, Willie Randolph, Joe Torre, Bud Harrelson, Mike Cubbage, and  Roy McMillan. Believe it or not !

One time Mets golden boy, Lee Mazzili was a eight time national speed skating champ. Believe it or not !!

Original Mets catcher, Harry Chiti was the first player ever traded for himself ! Believe it or not !

George W Bush’s grandfather, George Herbert Walker, was a minority owner and co-founder of the Mets. Believe it or not !

One time Mets utility infielder, Matt Franco is the nephew of actor Kurt Russell. Believe it or not !

Mets legend, Mookie Wilson drives big rig trucks. Believe it or not !

2 Mets players have worn the number 24 after the Mets “unofficially” retired it in 1974. Kelvin Torve wore it for  10 days in 1990 and Rickey Henderson wore it for 2 season (99-’00). Believe it or not !!

And finally one time Mets third baseman, Richie Hebner was employed as a gravedigger during his off seasons. Believe it or not !!!

And with that said…. HERE COMES THE INFAMY !!!!!

Original Mets catcher, Hobie Landrith  is 85 (1930).

Utility infielder from the ’74 season, Rich Puig is 62 (1953).

Middle reliever from the ’95 season, Don Florence is 48 (1967).

Pinch hitter from the ’08 season, Abraham Nunez  is 39 (1976).

Current Mets Left Fielder Curtis Granderson is 34 (1981).

Other transactions of note include:
The New York Mets traded outfielder, Bob Gallagher to the San Francisco Giants for reserve outfielder, Leon Brown on March 16, 1976.

The New York Mets released  back up third baseman/outfielder, Danny Garcia on March 16, 2005.

Mo Vaughn once killed a man for just looking at his dinner !!! ( actually that is untrue)

  1. lagranderusty Believe it or not, other teams pitchers hurt their arms and require surgery too. Unless Cliff Lee & Chris Sale became Mets.

  2. heshsson did you read the post ? It was meant as a fact – not a dig at the team

  3. lagranderusty Just wanted to point to the many amateur doctors that occupy #MetsTwitter that this a baseball problem & not just a Met one.

  4. lagranderusty The only precaution seems to be don’t let them pitch. Genetics play a great part in this.

  5. lagranderusty just did quick skim but probably only one i knew was Matt Franco was Kurt Russell’s nephew. not sure what that says about me

  6. KennedyKr_is lol I’m not crying – is it a bad loss – yes but we have depth
