Security Theater

I know Shannon and I have been talking about the metal detectors coming to all MLB ballparks this season. We have brought up about how does the metal detectors actually help? You already had wands in place and why did it take fourteen years for this to be put into effect in the ballparks?
Now we have beaten this to death with our thoughts about them. But let’s start talking about one problem that has seemed to be getting out of hand. Fans that can’t hold their beer, get beer muscles, and start trouble because there are fans from the opposing team that the team that they root for are playing.

Good natured ribbing is one thing but when it gets heated and out of control where is the security for that?
A few Mets fans that I know that we’re down in DC yesterday (they went on their own and weren’t hanging with out group) got harassed all game. Security was nowhere to be seen.

I was told the Nats fans that were starting the trouble were enjoying more libations then they should have and we’re getting out of control the longer the game went on. Now the Mets fans that were involved with this I know can put back a few beers but when I ran into them after the game, I could tell that they didn’t go overboard with the drinks. If they had, I’d be tsk tsk tsking them too.

Okay, so back to what happened. The Nats fans wouldn’t let the Mets fans leave and walk up the stairs and got into their faces.

No security around them when this happened. There was a scuffle after the Nats fans made the first move and finally security and the cops showed up after all this happened. Lucky for the Mets fans there were some Nats fans and workers there that told the cops what happened and they were able to go home without anyone getting arrested or seriously hurt.

I’m real glad those metal detectors were there to stop a skirmish like this.
