Face of the Franchise: Cespedes to re-sign with Mets 4 years $110 million

cespedes 2016

Well well well, won’t you look at this!

So this is only a good thing.  Cespedes has been the straw that stirs the drink in Queens, and has been really eye-catching since his appearance at the Citi Field All Star Game.

The Mets are spending money!  Cespedes can handle New York.  His baseball card will have at least 6 NYM season it (barring of course the 2019 fire sale before all the SPs hit free agency, but lets worry about that then, ha.)

He’s a star.  He’s liked.  He’s been a good citizen.  His worst vices seem to be golf and fancy cars.

Don’t worry about the money.  That’s just paper money as part of a bigger business that owns real estate, builds malls, runs TV networks and owns a baseball team.  This contract money comes back to ownership in the form of tickets and TV ratings…and general perception in the market (which helps with things like selling in-stadium advertising).

Also, and I hate to bring this up, it creates the Face of The Franchise for the post David Wright era.  I know Batman and Thor and JDG are groovy and all, but you need everyday players to be The Face.  Granderson has been trying really hard to play the role, and he’s also been a great citizen – but his best seasons are likely higher up on his baseball card than 2017 and beyond might be.  So Yoenis becomes Mr. Met into the 20’s (welcome to the future, yikes).

Nice job Mets.  Now make it official.
