So um maybe the Mets won’t retire David Wright’s number?

Here’s one of those things you kind of know in the back of your mind, but it doesn’t really register until too late.

There’s a good chance the Mets don’t retire David Wright’s number.

In some ways that seems unthinkable. However, the Mets have kind of sort of made their semi-official rule that it’s Cooperstown or Bust, and DW isn’t making Cooperstown, and is borderline Hall of Garvey (the Hall of Garvey is my creation for players like Steve Garvey, Don Mattingly, Keith Hernandez and Gary Sheffield, maybe I will make that my next off-season time-killer project.)

I have no doubt that 5 will join the ranks of 8 and 24 in the back of the closet, never given out (yeah yeah Kelvin Torve, I know) but will we see a 5 on the fence?  Maybe not.

While we’re discussing DW, and I say none of this to be mean, will David wind up as the all time franchise home run leader?  He’s ten away.  Sure he might have it by May 15th, but I also worry that there aren’t ten home runs left in him which is a shame.
