As I have said over and over on both the blog and the podcast, I want David Wright the man to be OK. If he can also play baseball, awesome.
There is how I feel, and what I see.
If you are shocked to hear that David Wright might not make Opening Day (translation: won’t make Opening Day) that surprises me. He has played 38 and 37 games the last two seasons.
Then let’s look at the roster. Why do you suppose Flores is around? Clearly the expectation has been that Reyes would be the every day third baseman.
We all love David. The Captain. The guy with all the records. But The David Wright Era in Queens is over. This is Cespedes’ team, going back a season and a half, and looking ahead to the next three.
Will David retire? Not a chance. He can stay in extended rehab and make $67 million on his remaining contract. He also has a lot of value to the club in the way he does those Meet & Greets before the games with the VIPs.
None of this is how we all wanted it. But that’s how it is.
