Looking ahead: could the Mets sell out a 1969 Mets Day in 2019?

As the herald of the 2019 Rebuild, I know that tough times are coming to Queens, and that your faith will be tested.

In the not too distant future, Duda, Walker, Cabrera, Reyes, Wright, Granderson, Bruce and Matt Harvey will all be gone.  Sure you love Yo and Thor and JDG and Rosario and Smith, but there’s gonna be some lean times coming.

Today I am here to ask difficult questions.

2019 will be the 50th anniversary of the 1969 Mets.  Even old guys like me will be 50 then….and I’m too young for 1969.   A few years back, during some 2010 lean times, you guys couldn’t even be bothered to show up for putting Gooden, Strawberry, Davey and Cashen into the Mets Hall.  What happens when Tom and Buddy and the rest show up at Citi Field?  Will the place be half-full?

I know that sounds crazy, but who are the 1969 Mets fans?   Will they come out?  For the majority of the fanbase now life starts at Piazza, and I’m not sure that Generation Piazza has been tested as adults.  Sure the Mets sucked for most of the Citi Field years but Generation Piazza was young.  Are they ready for the 2019 Rebuild, or will they check out?

Let me ask you a more difficult question.   Pure business.  Leave the emotions at home.  Should the Mets even bother?

The Mets do just fine gimmicking on hair hats, fidget spinners, and t-shirts.  Pure business, should they bother inviting a bunch of guys that most of their fans never saw play?  Does it make financial sense?   Would it make just as much financial sense to steal from the Bronx and give Piazza a monument and sell out the place for him?

Again, I was there when you didn’t show up for 1986.  Why would you show up for 1969?

The lean times are coming folks.  The Herald of the 2019 Rebuild is here to prepare you.
