It Independence Day and to all you Americans out there- happy birthday!
SLACKISH REACTION: That Granderson HR was surely exciting and I was hoping it would keep Gary Cohen up late, but the bullpen sucked and now the Mets are 6 games under and 10.5 back on the Fourth of July which is one of those days where you’re actually “allowed” to look at the standings. Don’t worry, the Mets play the Cardinals next and they’ve also been awful so expect another fake run.
GARY COHEN SLEEP WATCH: Hopefully you already know about today’s 11am start, if not you may want to turn on the TV. If Gary can fight through today’s sleepiness he can get a great night’s rest and sleep in before tomorrow’s night game. Then he has to fly to STL and change one time zone, but he will have an off-day to recuperate, and then the All Star Break is coming, so Gare should be OK.

Hey can we get the press notes every morning? Now I don’t have to come with anything and can just cut and paste!
HAPPY 4TH OF JULY: The Mets are 30-35 all-time on Independence Day…New York is 14-18 on the road on July 4, including a rather famous 16-13 win in 19 innings at Atlanta on July 4, 1985.
EARLY…BUT NOT THE EARLIEST: The Mets will play at 11:05 a.m. today…The Elias Sports Bureau notes that is not the earliest start time in team history…New York played several holiday doubleheaders at Pittsburgh’s Forbes Field which began at 10:30 a.m., including one on July 4, 1969.
STARS & STRIPES UNIFORMS: The Mets along with all of MLB will wear special stars & stripes uniforms and caps from July 1 through today to celebrate Independence Day…All proceeds from sales of these jerseys and caps will be donated to organizations that benefit veterans and their families.
I was hoping to include the lineup in the Morning Laziness but looks like everyone slept in.
