The Mets should have brought in R.A. Dickey for 2017. This not a second guess, it’s a first guess from last October (you guys NEVER listen to me).
So let’s take a look. You’re probably still like WHAT, Dickey sucks!!!
Well…he is 9-9 with a 4.28 ERA. So-so. Let’s dig deeper.
Here are the two columns I look at – 28 Games Started and 170.1 IP.
Let’s put that on the 2017 Mets for a second. You know, the team with so much pitching that there’s no room for this guy.
Games Started: deGrom with 29. Next up is Gsellman with 19.
Innings? Jake again at 188.1 and Gselleman second at 101.2
Gsellman.
So is Dickey awesome? No. But he eats innings.
See last night – Terry used 5 relievers (4 of which I have never heard of) to close out a game they lost by 12 runs because The Dark Knight didn’t eat innings.
The spillover to that happens tonight. Maybe Dickey also gives up a ton of runs…but if he can go 6 innings, it saves an arm, maybe two.
I’m fine with a 5th starter going 10-15 as long as he pitches 6 or 7 innings and takes his turn. Otherwise you wind up with Collinsball and starting gas named Flexen.
Would I bring Dickey back at age 43? I would for sure consider it, doubly so given that he’s a Mets hero and they won’t have much to market. If you told me he was the 5 starter….fine in my book. I imagine the Braves pick up his opinion and this is moot.
