So there I am, watching the game on SNY. Enjoying it. Much better than watching a game on Facebook.
I had twitter open. I like to do that. Even Keith Hernandez is on twitter. Maybe I am a fool.
Suddenly I see this.
METS WIN!! pic.twitter.com/L75hr2ohjp
— SportsNet New York (@SNYtv) April 5, 2018
The problem is, on TV, the game was still happening. Spoiler.
What’s the point of the tweet?
Is SNY Twitter positioning itself as the instantaneous place to get Mets scores? Is that the best use of the feed? Not promoting upcoming shows? Not recycling content we may have missed? Is the point to spoil your own broadcast?
Let me play this out. Maybe we should all just follow the game on SNY’s twitter. Don’t watch. After all, it seems to be positioned as the fastest way to follow the game. Even faster than TV. Way faster than the SNY stream.
Sounds like a plan.
Then, all the TV revenue can dry up and SNY can focus on monetizing their lightning fast twitter feed.
Is this the point? Think it through fellas.
(The official @mets also have this spoiler issue.)
Then there’s The Beat. They can’t wait to tweet about what’s happening in the game. Do they really think their followers are people who follow them for game updates? Is it possible their fans watch and/or listen to games? Or are there tons of people who love the Mets, but can’t be bothered to listen/watch/GameDay and prefer to get information from beat tweets.
Finally, the lineup. There are two camps:
- The annoying people who retweet the lineup
- The really insane people who RETYPE the lineup.
We all follow the Mets. That’s enough. Sure every now and then there is lineup “news” (Whoa, Matt Harvey is starting at third base) but for the most part what is the point of the lineup retweet. It does not make your brand of Beat stickier.
The reason we all loved Rubin is because HE GOT THE STORY. He had the different angle. I can get the lineup from 50000 people in twitter, one of which is @mets. This does not increase your personal value or your employer’s value at all. When A.I. can do your job….
Everyone think about what you’re doing. Especially the spoilers.
