With the passing of Harry Anderson (the judge from Night Court, or for you millennials just a cool guy on a sitcom that’s all you need to know) we started talking on Twitter about Cheers, and then I had a great silly idea. (Millennials, think of Cheers as a Frasier Prequel. You know what Frasier is? No? When the hell were you born)
Anyway for Gen X – I love the following idea. We do a reboot of Cheers…
Our show stars Matt Harvey as Matt “The Real Deal” Harvey, a good looking washed up ex-MLB star who is a total babe hound. In retirement he has opened a bar in Queens, and hired his former manager Terry to be a bartender.
You’re in. Now here’s whats so amazin’ Here are some episode descriptions fro the original Cheers. All I am doing here is changing the names.
S1E1 Stuffy & sophisticated Diane Chambers is dumped by her fiance in a blue collar Queens bar where she meets baseball star-turned-bar owner Matt Harvey
S1E3 Carla’s fiery temper almost costs Matt the bar when she attacks an obnoxious Yankees fan. Diane offers to help by suggesting Carla seek anger management.
S1E4 Matt realizes how much he misses his former sports celebrity status when a local newscaster asks to interview him again.
S1E10 Matt gets a phonecall from an old baseball friend, Neil Walker, who has been having a lousy season. He wonders what he should do, and Matttries to help but can’t think of what to do. (Note in the original the character actually did have the last name Walker.)
S1E13 Matt lets the sexy appeal of an agent and the glamour of the public spotlight lure him into being a TV pitchman. (DUDES WE DON’T EVEN HAVE TO REWRITE THESE)
S2E5 Coach Terry becomes a slave driver when he’s put in charge of Little League team.
S2E15 Matt and Diane want to spend some time alone together, but the lonely Coach Terry keeps joining them, not realizing he is spoiling things for them.
S3E5 Matt makes up an elaborate story to explain how he got shot in the rear end, not wanting to tell everyone the real reason – he was shot at by a jealous husband.
S3E15 Matt returns to the mound for a charity softball game against Playboy bunnies, but his competitive spirit ruins the day when he strikes them all out.
S3E16 Matt and Terry are taking the same night school course in geography, but while Terry studies, Matt dates the teacher.
