I woke up to a nice surprise this morning and thanks to the folks at the Old Time Baseball Photos Account…
Stumbled on this photo of a Giants-Mets game and with some sleuthing and help of @thorn_john we found its historical significance – Willie Mays and Giants 1st game back to Polo Grounds since they left in 1957. And they also passed along this cool article about the sleuthing behind the photo.
This came up yesterday when I mentioned how it must have been odd to see the Giants come home to the Polo Grounds. Imagine it’s 2023 and Noah Syndergaard and the Montreal Mets stroll into Citi Field for a game against the Empires. Wouldn’t that be odd? (The truly odd one must have been the 1961 Twins playing in Washington.)
Maybe we will know sooner than we think…the Mets have announced their plans to play in Mercury Nevada in 2021.
Thanks Old Time Baseball Photos.
